By Thi Associated Press CINCINNATI-Willie McCovey slammed his second home run of the evening in the seventh inning of the second game, sparking the San Francisco Giants to a 7-5 vic- tory over Cincinnati and a split of their doubleheader last night. The Reds won the opener 10-6. McCovey's 23rd homer, off Jack Baldschun with one out in the seventh, snapped a 5-5 tie. Mc- Covey added his fourth hit of the game, a single, in the ninth and scored the Giants' last run. The Reds stormed from behind in the first game, scoring five times on four hits and a San Fran- cisco error in the fifth inning. Willie Mays' 531st career home run was one of four homers for the Giants in the game. Braves Upend LA ATLANTA-Denis Menke's run- scoring single climaxed a four-run rally in the ninth inning that vaulted the Atlanta Braves to a 10-9 victory over Los Angeles last night and knocked the Dodgers out of first place in the National League. Ty Cline ignited the Braves' winning rally when he.singled and continued to third on Lou John- son's two-base error. Mack Jones singled in Cline, went to second on Phil Regan's wild pitch, advanced to third as Felipe Alou beat out an infield single and scored on Joe Torre's single in front of the plate. Rico Carty then singled off Ron Perranoski for the third run of the inning, and Menke followed with the sixth hit of the inning, a single that drove in pinch runner Gary Geiger from second. * * * Horton Saves Tigers WASHINGTON-Willie Horton's two-out, two-run single 12th inning lifted the Tigers past Washington night. in the Detroit 5-3 last already had four hits.
