CHICAGO-The Chicago Cubs
rebelled from the monotony of re-
peated defeats yesterday as Ernie
Banks homered and Dick Ells-
worth ended the Cubs' five-game
losing streak by downing Atlanta
5-2.
Ellsworth, who has lost 17 games,
limited the Braves to 10 hits. It
was his fifth victory.
Denny Lemaster, posting his
eighth loss in 17 decisions, lost a
2-0 lead in the first inning when
Glenn Beckert singled and was
forced by Billy Williams before
Ron Santo walked.
Banks' blast into the left field
bleachers followed. Catcher Randy
Hundley's 12th homer of the year
was the first of the Cubs' two runs
in the second. Don Kessinger's
single became the second run on
a sacrifice, an outfield out and
Clay Carroll's wild pitch after he
replaced Lemaster.
Mets Foil Grmts
NEW YORK-Pinch-hitter Ron
Swoboda's three-run homer with
one out in the ninth inning yes-
terday climaxed a four-run rally
that gave the New York Mets an
8-6 victory over San Francisco.

Trailing 6-4, the Mets knocked
Juan Marichal out of the box
when Ken Boyer led off the ninth
with a home run. Lindy McDan-
iel relieved and was touched for
singles by Ed Bressoud and John
Stephenson before Swoboda slam-
med his eighth homer over the
left center field wall.
Marichal, seeking his 18th vic-
tory of the season and 17th career
triumph without a loss over the
Mets, pitched perfect ball for 5%
innings before pitcher Dennis Ri-
bant singled with two out in the
sixth.
Indians Trip Birds
CLEVELAND-Gary Bell pitch-
ed a three-hitter and Leon Wag-
ner provided two key singles as
the Cleveland Indians beat the
Baltimore Orioles 3-1 last night.
The only hits off Bell were Dave
Johnson's single, driving in the
Orioles' run in the fourth inning,
and singles by Brooks Robinson in
the second and ninth inning.
Cleveland grabbed a 1-0 lead in
the second when Fred Whitfield
singled and scored on Del Cran-
dall's double.
The Tribe scored again in the
third when Wagner singled, ad-
vanced on Chuck Hinton's hit and
raced home on a single by Max
Alvis.
The Indians added another run
in the fourth when Crandall walk-
ed, took second on a wild pitch,
went to third on Larry Brown's
single and scored on a single by
Wagner.
