0 FRIDAY, JULY 8, 1966 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FIVE BRITISH OPEN SECOND ROUND: Nickaus Leads Field with 137 For Direct Classified Ad Service Phione 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 12 Noon to 2 P.M. By The Associated Press MUIRFIELD, Scotland - Jack Nicklaus subjugated Muirfield's 6,887-yard, par 71 seaside links yesterday with a four-under-par 67 to seize the lead at the half- way mark of the British Open Golf Championship he has never won. The Golden Bear from Colum- bus, Ohio, tacked his rousing round onto his opening 70 for 137, just one shot ahead of Eng- land's master golfer, Peter Butler. Nicklaus charged into the lead after Butler had cracked out a 65, shattering Muirfield's record of 66 held jointly by Henry Cotton way back in 1948 and Phil Rogers of La Jolla, Calif., who equalled it in the morning, Three at 140 Rodgers, Harold Henning of South Africa and Kel Nagle ofI Australia were directly behind at 140. Doug Sanders of Jai, Calif., and Ronnie Shade, Scotish ama- teur champion, stood at 141. Bruce Devlin of Australia was at 142, The cut-off of the field of 130 to bring it down to low 55 and ties was established at 150 and ties, which produced 64 players who will continue on in the 18 hole rounds today and Saturday. Eight of the 10 Americans quali- fied for the remainder of the trip. They included Julius Boros, Mid- Pines, N.C., 144; Arnold Palmer, Latrobe, Pa., and Dick Sikes, Springdale, Ark., 145; Tony Lema, San Leandro, Calif., 147, and Dave Marr, Litchfield Park., Ariz., at 149. Player Slips to 74 There were no major surprises in the 36-hole knockout. But Gary Player of South Africa, who won his British Open crown here at Muirfield in 1959, disappointed with 72-74-146. And Lema, the 1964 champion at St. Andrews, was struggling with his 71-76--147. Palmer looked for a while as though he was en route to a com- manding position with a first nine of 33, including an eagle, but he slid on the back nine for a prosaic 72 to go with Wednesday's equally uninspiring 73. He has had 36 putts in both rounds and said glumly: "That's too many." Nicklaus Satisfied Nicklaus, on the other hand, had only 32 putts and was in charge with every club in the bag. "I was pretty much in com- mand of my game," he said. "I knew what the ball was going to do." He used his driver only four' times but was so long with his shorter woods and irons that it made little difference. He got into big jungle rough once but came cracking out and still got his par. Eight Break Par In contrast to Wednesday when only Nicklaus and England's Jimmy Hitchcock broke par with 70's, eight golfers accomplished it yesterday. They included But- ler's 65. Rodgers' 66, Nicklaus' 67, Nagle's 68, Henning, Devlin and Doug Sewell of England with 69, and Sanders and Shade with 70's. The reason was the shift in weather. A west wind blew up, presenting an entirely new course from the Muirfield of Wednesday when the east wind was coming off the Firth of Forth. Clouds and sunshine alternated but the threat of rain held off, save for an oc- casional drop or two. Player's Mark May Fall At the rate Nicklaus was play- ing, Gary Player's 284 at Muirfield PERSONAL FRIENDLY KITTENS need home-Free. 663-0653. Kaline's 18th homer, in the third, following Norm Cash's sin- gle, climaxed a seven-hit Tiger barrage in the first three innings against Grant, who absorbed his 12th defeat against five victories. Willie Horton, who doubled home Jim Northrup for the Tigers' first run in the second, doubled again after Kaline's homer to finish Grant. Mets Smash Phils PHILADELPHIA - The New York Mets blew a five-run lead, then battled back for three runs' in the ninth on two walks and doubles by Al Luplow and Larry Elliot to beat the Philadelphia Phillies 9-6 yesterday. Luplow sent in the winning run and Elliot drove in two more. It was the second straight vic- tory for the Mets over the Phils. In the wild game, the Mets led 6-1 for 31 innings, largely on a Jerry Grote's two-run homer in the second and Roy McMillan's two-run double in the fourth. The Phils got one run in the first on Johnny Callison's solo homer, and then tied it up by the eighth inning. Bob Uecker's solo home run off Ron Gardner even- * ed the score at 6-6. It was Ueck- er's fifth. Tony Taylor also had a solo home run for the Phils in the sixth. MANTLE OMITTED: Mele Alston All-Star Tea By The Associated Press BOSTON-Mickey Mantle, the New York Yankees' aging and ailing but still dangerous slugger, was left off the American League All-Star team for the first time in 13 years today as the squad was filled for the annual classic with the National League next Tuesday at St. Louis. Minnesota Manager Sam Mele, who will direct the American All- Stars in St. Louis' Busch stadium, named Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox, Rocky Colavito of the Cleveland Indians and rookie Tommie Agee of the Chi- cago White Sox as reserve out- fielders. The 35-year-old Mantle, who ranks seventh in baseball's all- time home run derby with 488, reportedly was omitted by Mele at the request of the Yankees. Mele picked the Twins' Earl Battey and Baltimore rookie Andy Etchebarren to back up starting catcher Bill Freehan of Detroit. Mele followed the voting in pick- ing Norm Cash of Detroit as his first baseman behind rookie start- er George Scott of Boston; second havac Rnhhvn Mearisnn of Browne's single scored pinch-run- ner Don Kessinger. Brown regis- tered the third run of the frame later on an error and Randy Hundley's sacrifice fly. Santo has hit safely in 30 of his last 31 games. The Pirates ganged up on start- er Curt Simmons for a 3-0 lead before anybody was retired in the third. Jose Pagan's homer fol- lowed a walk toDon Clendenon in the second. Roberto Clemente's single scored Gene Alley in the third before Ferguson Jenkins res- cued Simmons. The Pirates picked up a fourth run on Manny Mota's homer lead- ing off the eighth against Billy Hoeft. * , , SF Wins on Homers SAN FRANCISCO - Two-run homers by Tito Fuentes, Willie Mays and Cap Peterson brought the San Francisco Giants from a five-run deficit to a 7-5 victory yesterday over the Cincinnati Reds, who took their ninth straight defeat. Fuentes homered in the third with pitcher Ray Sadecki, who had doubled, aboard to make it, 5-2. Then Mays hit his 20th homer and 525th of his career in the fifth to make it 5-4. Peterson followed, in the same inning to put the Giants ahead. Fuentes was on when Mays con- nected, and Willie McCovey wasj aboard when Fuentes homered. Don Pavletich doubled home two runs in the first and Leo Carde- nas hit a three-run homer in the seniators c-5 last night. Tommy John was coasting be- hind an eight-run lead when the Senators struck for three runs in the seventh. One was scored onI a bases-loaded walk to Bo Saver- ine, another on a double play and the third on Fred Valentine's dou-# ble. Hoyt Wilhelm took over after Ken Harrelson led off the Wash- ington eighth with his eighth home run. Don Lock homered off Wilhelm,'and Juan Pizarro had to be called on after singles by; Ed Brinkman and pinch hitter Willie Kirkland. Pizarro retired pinch-hitter Jim King on a pop. Imks Top Boston NEW YORK - Mickey Mantle capped a five-run New York up- rising in the ninth inning with a two-out, three-run homer, giving the Yankees a 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox last night. Boston's Rollie Sheldon had a six-hit shutout going into the ninth inning when, with one out, he walked two men and was re- placed by Don McMahon. McMahon was greeted by aj pinch single by Jake Gibbs which scored one run and moved the other runner to third. Tom Tresh tied it with a sacrifice fly. Bobby Richardson followed with a sin- gle and Mantle ended it with his homer into the right field seats. Major League Standings1 AMERICAN LEAGUE W L Pct.
