By The Associated Press DETROIT-Joe Adcock slam- med a three-run homer in the sixth inning and the California Angels held off a late Detroit surge, handing the Tigers their fourth straight loss, 4-3, last night. Adcock entered the game in the fourth inning after Norm Siebern pulled a muscle in his right leg while running out a run-scoring single. Adcock's homer, his 10th of the year and third in three games fol- lowed singles by Ed Kirkpatrick and Jim Fregosi. Angels' starter Dean Chance held the Tigers to two hits through the first six innings but lost his shutout in the seventh when Al Kaline doubled and Jim Northrup followed with a homer. Cards Nip Giants SAN FRANCISCO--Al Jackson pitched a two-hitter and St. Louis speed helped build two runs as the Cardinals topped the San Francisco Giants 3-1 yesterday. Jackson, winning his eighth game in 14 decisions, retired the last 16-batters in a row. SPORTS SHORTS: Clarke Breaks World Marks By The Associated Press STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Ron Clarke recaptured the world rec- ord for the 5000 meters with a 13:16.6 clocking in an interna- tional track and field meet last night and simultaneously bettered his world record for the three miles with a 12:50.4. Clarke of Australia thus took the 5000 meters mark back from Kenya's Kipchoge Keino who had done it in 13:24.2 in breaking Clarke's previous 13:25.8 record. Clarke had set that mark in Los Angeles on June 4, 1965, and in the same race had compiled the listed world mark for the three miles with 13:00.4. Dell Upsets Riessen INDIANAPOLIS-Dick Dell, a member of the Michigan fresh- man tennis squad last year, upset Davis Cupper Marty Riessen in the first round of the Western Tennis Tournament yesterday, The score of the match was 6-4, 7-5 and was one of several first- round upsets which also saw Tony Roche and Charles Pasarell elim- inated. Dell, a member of the Junior Davis Cup team, rallied from a 3-0 deficit in the first set and from 3-1 in the second to achieve his victory., Lou Brock, who stole three bases, led off the game by reach- ing first after striking out on a wild pitch that bounced off the plate. He stole second and came home on consecutive ground outs by Phil Gagliano and Curt Flood. Dal Maxville opened the eighth with a single, moved to second on Jackson's sacrifice bunt, went to third on an error by losing pitcher Ron Herbel and scored on a squeeze bunt by Gagliano. Pirates Blank Cubs CHICAGO-Rookie Woody Fry- man fired a three-hitter for his third straight shutout as Pitts- burgh defeated the Chicago Cubs 6-0 yesterday. Fryman was tagged for a single in the first inning and a double in the third, and a single in the ninth, all of them by Billy Wil- liams. Only three other Cubs reached base, two on errors and the other on a base on balls. He retired 17 batters in a row over one stretch. Donn Clendenon and Jose Pa- gan were the Pirates' hitting stars. Clendenon hammered a two-run homer in the sixth and Pagan had three doubles, driving in two runs. Ma jor League Standings LOST AND FOUND LOST-Man's brown wallet with impor- tant papers, Reward.
