THURSDAY, JUNE 30,1966 THE MICHIGAN DlATLY im AAftW i? PAGEFIV 5 1 - Ralston Faces Santana in Tennis Final By The Associated Press WIMBLEDON, England-Dennis Ralston, often the stormy petrel of United States tennis, fought his way into the final round of the men's singles of the All-England tournament yesterday and will play Manuel Santana of Spain for the title on Friday. Ralston, his power service flick- ing chalk dust from time to time, defeated Cliff Drysdale of South Africa 6-8, 8-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 after Santana, the stylish holder of the United States singles crown, elim- inated unranked Owen Davidsonz of Australia 6-2, 4-6, 9-7, 3-6, 7-5. Ralston thus becomes the first U.S. Wimbledon finalist since Chuck McKinley, now a Port Washington,. N.Y., stock-broker, won in 1963 at the expense of Rod Laver of Australia.3 It is the first time that the title round hasn't listed an Aus- tralian since 1955 when Tony Tra- bert of Cincinnati, defeated Kurt Nielsen of Denmark for the top honors. The American, often accused of not being able to win the big ones because he failed to concentrate } on the matters at hand, several times drew the ire of the 15,000 spectators around the famed cen- ter court because of his slow walk when exchanging courts. But this time he was dedicated and per- mitted nothing to interfere with his game. i1 In the first and third sets Ral- ston's service wasn't marking and the deceptively casual South Af- rican stroked his way to a 2-1 lead in sets. But in the second, fourth and final sets the American got his serves-the cornerstone of his game - working and Drysdale r never looked like he was finding the answer. Outfielders Chosen for All-Stir Game By The Associated Press NEW YORK-Five right field- ers will start the 1966 All Star baseball game July 12 at St. Louis. Frank Robinson of Baltimore, Tony Oliva of Minnesota, Al Ka- line of Detroit, Hank Aaron of Atlanta and Roberto Clemente of Pittsburgh all have been voted into the opening line-up. The new rules established by Commissioner William D. Eckert provide for a general vote on out- * fielders instead of a ballot for spe- cific positions as in the past. Consequently, the entire Ameri- can League outfield will be made up of men who normally play right although both Oliva and Kaline have played center for stretches. Willie Mays will be the National League center fielder for the 13th time. He will be flanked by Aaron and Clemente, who normally are right fielders although Aaron does shift to left in some parks. Robinson, a star with Cincin- nati in the National League before he was traded to Baltimore last winter, becomes the third man to make the grade in both leagues. The others were pitchers Jim Bunning and Schoolboy Rowe, both of whom were American League All Star picks at Detroit and later at Philadelphia in the National.
