SAN FRANCISCO (M)-Arnold Palmer shot a four-under-par 66 and Bill Casper fashioned a 68 Yesterday producing a two-way tie at 137 for the halfway lead Track Meet Records Fall BLOOMINGTON (AY) - Randy Matson of Texas A&M shattered his own one-day old shotput meet record on every one of his four tosses, while three defending champions were dethroned in the NCAA Track and Field Meet yes- terday. A second NCAA record was es- tablished in the discus trials by Southern California's Gary Carl- sen, who flipped the platter 190' 11". The old record was 190' 1/". One of the oldest in the NCAA blooks it was set by Southern Californias Sim Iness in 1953. Matson's best in the shotput finals was 67' 1112", about 21/2 feet better than his record quali- fying toss of 65' 6%" Thursday. Somewhat a disappointment was Tommie Smith of San Jose State, Smith finished second in the 100-yard dash in which Nebraska's Charlie Greene retained his title with a surging finish to match the meet record of :9.3. These feats started the down- fall of four defending champions in yesterday's program of six finals and five preliminaries for today's 13-event windup. NCAA Tennis Finals Today MIAMI (P)-Top-seeded Charles Pasarell of UCLA, trailing after three sets, surged back with a powerful offensive game yesterday to defeat Tom Edlefsen of South- ern California in the semifinals of the NCAA .Tennis Champion- ships. The victory in the 21 hour match by a score of 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, sent Pasarell, a U.S. Davis Cupper, into today's finals against second-seeded Stan Smith of Southern California. Earlier, Smith smashed to a straight-set victory over Ian Crookenden of UCLA, 6-4, 6-0, 6-3. Quaterfinals results in doubles:! James Osborne and Mike Mar- tines, Utah, defeated Jaimie Fil- lol and Juan Rubio, Miami, 6-1, 6-4. Walter Johnson and P a ul Speicher, Georgia Tech, defeated Jerry Cromwell and Joaquin Loyo- Mayo, Southern California, 6-4, 5-7, 8-6. DAILY OFFICI t t n F' s a 7 t u r J I ' k i E i , ,4 f? t . in the 66th National Open Cham- pionship. Both had to move over, how- ever, for an assistant club pro, Rives R. McBee, who canned nine birdies for a record-tying round 64. McBee, a former school teacher and a pro for less than a year, had a 36-hole score of 140, three off the pace. He had a 76 Thursday. McBee's 64 matched the best 18 holes ever played in this cham- pionship, dating back to 1895, which has seen a parade of the greatest players-Harry Vardon, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarazen, Bob Jones and Ben Hogan. The course and mounting pres- sure claimed a trio of distinguish- ed victims in the first round lead- er, Al Mengert; defending cham- pion Gary Player, and former ti- tleholder Gene Littler, who start- ed the day at 68 tied with Don Massengale one shot back of Mengert's 67. Mengert's game fell apart and he skied to a 77 for 144. Player, after opening with a 78, managed to rally only with a 72 at 150 which apparently got him safely past the cut. Littler finished with an 83 and was in danger of missing the cut at 151. The field was to be cut to the low 60 and ties at the end of the second round. McBee shared the 140 bracket with Phil Rodgers, who shot his second straight par 70.
