By The Associated Press DETROIT - Willie Kirkland drove in the winning run with a' seventh-inning single as Washing- ton snapped an eight-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers last night. The Senators broke a 2-2 tie in the seventh when Fred Valen- tine was hit by a pitch. Don Lock's third hit of the game moved Val- entine to third, and Kirkland's single to left brought him home. The Tigers nicked Phil Ortega for a run in the first on Dick Mc- Auliffe's pop fly double and Al Kaline's single. Washington moved ahead in the sixth when hits by Jim King and Lock, a sacrifice and Ken Mc- Mullen's single produced two runs. McAuliffe tied it in the Tiger sixth with a solo homer. * * * Indians, Bosox Split CLEVELAND-George Thomas and George Scott hammered ninth inning home runs that earned Boston an 11-7 victory and a split of its twi-night doubleheader against Cleveland last night. Whit- field drove in five runs as the Indians won the opener 8-7. Rocky Colavito's grand slammer in the eighth inning had tied the nightcap at 7-7, but Thomas broke the deadlock with his second home run of the season. After Carl Ya- strzemski walked and Tony Conig- liaro singled, Scott whacked his second home run of the game and 16th of the season, wrapping it up. Sonny Siebert, who pitched a no-hitter in his last appearance Friday night, picked up his sixth' victory in the opener, although he was knocked out in the seventh inning by a four-run Boston rally. * * Giants Smash Cubs Davenport in the seventh, was the fifth of the game for the National League-leading G i a n t s. Willie Mays, Tom Haller, Ollie Brown and Jim Hart also connected for San Francisco. Billy Hoeft, the third Chicago pitcher, gave up McCovey's tie- breaking shot and also was clipped for a run-scoring double by Hal Lanier in the seventh. The Cubs had scored three runs in the sixth to tie it at 7-7. * * * LA Trounces Chicago CHICAGO - Ed Kirkpatrick smashed two homers and knocked in four runs yesterday as the California Angels whipped the Chicago White Sox 10-4 and pitcher Dean Chance ended a six- game losing streak despite 15 Chi- cago hits. Home runs came early as Kirk- patrick lofted a solo shot in the second inning and Jose Cardenal St. Johns Nips Texas in NCAA World Series By The Associated Press OMAHA-Underdog St. John's of New York whipped Texas 2-0 last night in the College World Series second round on Walt Wi- towski's five-hitter, outstanding fielding and the hitting of John Zarzicki and Matt Galante. Top-ranked Southern Califor- nia and second-ranked Ohio State met in the last second round game. Steve Arlin pitched Ohio State' to a 6-2 victory over the USC Tro- jans in the game between the two top-ranked teams. OSU, now 24-5, and St. John's are the only un- beaten teams remaining in the double elimination tourney. In Monday night's game, Ohio did the same for his No. 7 in the third. Kirkpatrick boosted his season total to five with a blast into the upper right field deck in the eighth after Norm Siebern had walked. Before the eighth was over, the Angels had scored again when Tom Satriano walked and Paul Schaal doubled. Chance worked six innings. The big right-hander, now 4-8, yielded nine hits, struck out six and walked three. * * * Cards Bomb Mets NEW YORK-St. Louis knocked out Dick Rusteck, a shutout win- ner Friday in his first major league start, and scored six runs in the second inning yesterday on the way to a 9-2 victory over the New York Mets. Eleven Cards went to the plate in the second when Jerry Buchek hit a two-run homer. There were five singles, a walk, an interfer- ence call against catcher John Stephenson and a double steal in the inning. Rusteck, who had blanked Cin- cinnati in his first appearance after his recall from Jacksonville, never got anybody out this time. Lou Brock led the Cards' attack with a homer, double, two singles and two stolen bases. Maloney Blanks Pirates PITTSBURGH - Jim Maloney fired a three-hit shutout last night as the Cincinnati Reds edged the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0. Maloney didn't walk a batter and struck out seven in winning his seventh game against two de- feats. He was tagged for a single by Bill Mazeroski in the third and another by Roberto Clemente in the fourth, then set down nine Pirates in a row before Willie Stargell singled in the seventh. The Reds gave Maloney the only run he needed in the fourth off Pirate southpaw Woody Fryman, who lost his second game after winning his first four. McCovey's 12th homer, follow- ing a single by pinch hitter Jim Top Seeds Win, USC Leads in NCAA Tennis By The Associated Press MIAMI - Top-seeded Charles Pasarell of UCLA used smashing serves and power strokes to ad- vance to the third round of the NCAA Tennis Tournament yes- terday with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Steve Stockton of Tennessee. Stan Smith of Southern Cali- fornia, ranked second, and third- seeded Tom Edlefsen of Southern California also advanced. Smith swept easily through the second and third rounds with vic- tories over Dick Gilkey of Okla- homa, 6-1, 6-0, and Tom Karp of UCLA, 6-1, 6-4. Edlefsen downed Jerry Stewart of Michigan 6-4, 6-3 in a nip- and-tuck duel. Edlefsen came back to win three in a row -after being down 4-3 in the first set. Ian Crookenden of UCLA, No. 4 ranked player, came back from a shaky start in second round to beat Ron Goldman of Georgetown 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. After losing the first set, Crookenden, of New Zealand, trailed in the second before he started his rally. . Southern California led the team totals with 12 points, trailed by UCLA with nine. Miami, Mis- sissippi State and Tennessee, had seven each, while Georgia Tech, Pan American and Rice got fivet each. Former 'M' Star Berenson Traded to NY By The Associated Press MONTREAL - The New York Rangers acquired left winger Red Berenson from the Montreal Ca- nadiens yesterday in exchange for left winger Ted Taylor and a player to be named later. The trade was the first during the current National Hockey League meetings here. Berenson played college hockey at Michigan and is considered by many to be the best Wolverine player ever. Among other achieve- ments Berenson set the Michigan record for goals in a season, 43, was twice named to the All- American team, was named the most valuable player in the NCAA playoffs and was the team cap- tain in his senior year. Berenson was the first hockey player in history to go directly from college to the NHL and scored a goal in his first profes- sional game, a playoff game against Detroit in 1962. Berenson, 26, has played parts State received an 11-strikeout five- hit job from its No. 3 pitcher, Mike Swain, but needed help from ace Steve Arlin to beat Ok- lahoma State 4-2. Swain, a 6-foot-4 sophomore right-hander, survived a some- what shaky start as he retired' 14 straight batters while protect- ing a 1-0 edge. Swain also clout- ed a long two-run triple in the ninth, then scored on a squeeze bunt. But he was relieved by Dick Boggs after issuing his second and third walks in the ninth. Boggs walked two more, forcing in a run and Arlin walked home an- other before ending it with two strikeouts. St. John's tied an NCAA tourney record with four double plays. Second baseman Galente, a Yankee draftee, was 3-for-4, rais- ing his season average to .405 and ran his string of consecutive error- less chances to 130. Zarzicki belted a triple and a double. Witowski, a strong right-hander, dealt Texas only its second shut- out in seven years. Texas, No. 5 in the final poll, stands 21-8 while 13th ranked St. John's is 25-7. In other action yesterday Okla- homa State's 10th ranked Big 8 champions, eliminated fourth- ranked North Carolina 5-1 behind Richard Frank's pitching and a 10-hit attack. Third-ranked Arizona eliminated Northeastern of Boston 8-1 in the other afternoon game behind lefty Mike Paul's 11-strikeout, four-hit pitching. 521 WALNUT - Large furnished room Eight MonthLeases for male.
