By The Associated Press
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Jim
Ryun, the incredible Kansas fresh-
man, smashed the world half-mile
record and helped the U.S., Track
and Field Federation explode a
ringing rebuttal to the censuring
AA'U in its fourth national meet
yesterday.
Ryun, who may be barred from
the national AAU meet at New
York two weeks hence, raced to a
1:44.9 clocking in one of his rare
880 starts.
That tumbled the world record
of 1:45.1, set by New Zealand's
Peter Snell in 1962, an amazing
performance for Ryun, who last
Saturday ran the mile in 3:53.7,
only one-tenth of a second over
Frenchman Michael Jazy's world
record.
Eight Records
The two-day Federation meet,
which started under threat of
AAU reprisal as an unsanctioned
meet, produced eight Federation
records.
They came on a 13-event pro-
gram for both men and women.

WE TRY HARDER. We have to. We're'
3 miles from town. Our campus cus-
tomers go to great lengths to get out
here for sales, parts, and service.
There must be a reason for it. HONDA
of Ann Arbor. Z27

Meet sponsors said that not aI
single dropout resulted from an
ultimatum, issued by AAU Presi-
dent Clifford Buck Thursday
night, that unless. an AAU sanc-
tion was acquired all participating1
athletes would be ineligible for
the AAU meet which serves as a
qualifying test for the United
States-Russian dual meet in Los
Angeles in July.
Johnson Sets Three Records
Ryun's terrific world record ef-
fort in the half-mile stole the
show completely, but in women's
competition, 19-year-old Georgia
Johnson of Houston set three meet
records.
Georgia set Federation marks in
the 220-yard dash, 60-meter high
hurdles and the long jump.
Men's Federation records also
were set by Colgate's Richard
Johnson in the 440 hurdles; Gil-
bert Smith of Texas A&M in the
220 dash; and Arizona's John
Tushaus in the javelin.
Another women's meet mark
was set in the 440 by Sarah Back-
ford of the Iowa Track Club with
a :56.5 clocking.
Not Even Close
In the 880, Ryun finished 20
yards ahead of the pack.
It was a magnificent perform-
ance by the 19-year-old Ryun,
who exploded into a sizzling final
440 lap after running third the
first quarter.
It was the first real half-mile
try by Ryun, who previously con-
centrated on the mile.
Ryun set a nonchalant first
in which the early-pace-maker,
John Tillman of Ohio University,
was clocked in :52.9.
Ryun's quarter-mile time was
an unofficial :52.9. After running
third around the first turn in the

I final 440, Ryun stepped up his
pace and surged ahead of Tillman
and Tom Van Rtiden of the Okla-
homa State Track Club, running
one-two at the halfway mark.
Entering the final turn, Ryun
was really flying and the crowd of
1,000 sensed the kid from Kansas
was drawing a bead on a world
record.
Down the straightaway, Ryun
increased his speed and the world
record was his as he cut the finish
ribbon.

CLEVELAND - Sonny Siebert
of the Cleveland Indians pitched
the first no-hit game of the sea-
son last night, allowing only two
base-runners as the Indians de-
feated the Washington Senators
2-0.
The no-hitter was the first it
the majors since Sandy Koufax of
Los Angeles pitched a perfect
game against the Chicago Cubs
Sept. 9, 1965, and the first for
Cleveland since Bob Feller hurled
a no-hitter against Detroit in 1951.
The only Senator base-runners
against the 29-year-old right-
hander were Dick Nen on a one-
out walk in the fifth inning and
Paul Casanova on an error in the
eighth.
The Indians got the only run
they needed when Leon Wagner
hit his sixth homer into the right
field seats in the first inning.
Salmon rapped a run-scoring sin-
gle in the third.
