X25 SPECIAL GUITAR SALE Now in stock GOYA and GIBSON CLASSICS UNIVERSITY MUSIC HOUSE, INC. 518 William (Maynard House) NO 2-5578 New Project Gives Boost To Students EAST LANSING (f)--Michigan educators are trying to give a special stay-in-school boost to the student whose grades aren't tops, but who has the "glint in his eye" to succeed in life. In an effort to make sure that a student receives all the educa- tion he should, they are asking high school teachers to point him out for Project MEMO: "More Education, More Opportunity." "In this age and stage, so many kids wonder whether anybody else cares," said Gordon A. Sabine, a vice president of Michigan State University. Teacher Interested "We are proving that the teach- er is very interested, knows the kids and understands them," he said. Project MEMO, Sabine said, will write that special student a letter and provide what psychologists call the "significant other"-some- body outside the regular pattern who is interested, The letter will tell the student "someone believes in him, some- one is interested, someone will be proud when he uses his brains for all they are worth," Sabine said. Will Finance Education If he returns a questionnaire, Sabine added, MEMO will "help him find and finance as much more education beyond high school as his ability and drive and mo- tivation can justify." The financ- ing could include U.S. Opportunity grants. MSU and Michigan's 24 com- munity colleges, aided by a $100,- 000 federal grant, are conducting the project. Besides going to teachers, they are trying to reach students directly with advertising and newsletters. There is no typical MEMO stu- dent, Sabine said. "Many students may be equally eligible for different reasons," he said. "This is the beauty of it." It's simply up to the high school teacher, he explained. The teach- ers are asked: "Do you have a youngster who isn't performing at the top of the class but who has tremendous drive and motivation to succeed? A boy or girl who has the 'glint iin the eye,' about whom you say, 'I know this one is going to make something of life'?"
