[VE' TUESDAY9JUNE 7,1966 THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAM P' i tsxr, r 1 California Voters Will Decide Between Reagan, Christopher For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone 764-0557 Monday through Friday, 12 Noon to 2 P.M. 3 SAN FRANCISCO (P)-Republi- cans Ronald Reagan and George Christopher sprinted across Cali- fornia yesterday, debating at a distance their credentials for a November challenge to Democratic Gov. Edmund G. Brown. Brown's opponent will be determined in today's primary. Christopher called Reagan "a sure loser in November;" Reagan pointed to voter polls that show him .a winner over the former San Francisco mayor in today's bal- loting for the GOP gubernatorial nomination. K "Some people have been ignor- ing the part of the polls that show I can win in November and we will win," the actor-turned- politician said at Sacramento's rainy 'airport. "It's pretty hard not to be optimistic," Christopher said in San Diego ' that Reagan represents "retrogres- sive, backward ancient and anti- quated" ideas rejected by the vot- ers in Barry Goldwater's presi- dential campaign. Reagan stuck to his soft-sell nomination campaign, concentrat- ed his words on Brown, and said a Christopher victory in the pri- mary would not "lessen my com- mitment to a Republican victory in November." Votes for Reagan Christopher has said he would vote for Reagan, but he may not have much enthusiasm for the actor as GOP contender. The governor, rated an easy against Los Angeles Mayor Samuel against Los Angales Mayor Samuel W. Yorty, spent most of the day' in his Los Angeles office. He said the. Democratic primary outing was only spring training. Dairyman Christopher argued that only he could beat the gov- ernor. He asserted a Reagan race wwould pull to defeat Republicans elsewhere on the state ticket. He pinned his hopes, in a third try for state office, on undecided voters. Christopher said his race has been badly hurt by a renewal of 28-year-old accounts of a convic- tion for violation of state milk price laws. He accused Brown of "importing" columnist Drew Pear- son to publish the story anew in an effort to make sure that Rea- gan is the Republican nominee. He charged that Reagan men have promoted the stories. Reagan called the charge "last- minute desperation campaigning," said he had promised not to use the material against Christopher. Christopher's seven-stop cam- paign route to a wind-up rally in San Francisco's Chinatown took him into southern California cities here he acknowledged Reagan is strong. Reagan, who drew an estimated 5,000 people to a Sunday night rally in conservative-minded Santa Ana, worked southward from Sac- ramento to his Los Angeles base. Californians face a long, some- times bewildering primary ballot, with 789 candidates seeking jobs. The state has 7.85 million regis- tered voters, and Republican Sec- retary of State Frank M. Jordan forecast a 65 per cent turnout. Democrats outnumber Republi- cans by more than three to two. Primaries in Mississippi, Democrats Face Contest JACKSON, Miss. (A)-Mississip- pi voters will make election tory today in first primary loting for one Senate and House seats. his- bal- five An estimated 280,000 persons will take part in the voting, which is spiced by the state Republi- can party's first primary, the ab- sence of poll taxes for the first time this century and mushroom- ed Negro registration. The dominant Mississippi Dem- ocratic party will have primary contests in all races. Two were expected to be hot. Republicans, who will have can- didates for every seat but one in the Nov. 8 general election, will have a primary contest in the 4th district of central Mississippi. The 4th district elected the state's first Republican congress- man of the century two -years ago, during the state's Goldwater land- slide. But Rep. Prentiss Walker of Mize, who defeated veteran Dem- ocratic Rep. Arthur Winstead of Philadelphia that year, decided this time to oppose Sen. James Eastland, Democratic senator for a quarter of a century. State Rep. L. L. McAllister of Meridian, who became the GOP's first legislator of modern times in 1963, announced for the 4th district post with the backing of most party leaders. But Jasper County Atty. Travis Buckley of Louin jumped into the race before the qualifying deadline to force a primary. State Sen. Gillespie V. Mont- gomery of Meridian, State Sen. Paul Lee of Carthage, attorney J. 0. Hollis of Carthage and the Rev. Clinton Collier of Philadel- phia, a Negro, are Democratic primary candidates. The 5th district race matches Rep. William Colmer of Pascagou- la, Edward A. Khayat of Moss Point, and Lawrence Guyot of Pass Christian, a Negro. Eastland, Rep. Jamie Whitte, Rep. Tom Abernethy and Rep. John Bell Williams were expected to have only token opposition. Although Negro registration was up sharply, from about 30,000 a year ago to an estimated 130,000, it was not expected to be a vital factor.
