PAGE FOUR TH E MICHIGAN ]DAILY THURSDAY, JUNE 2,1966 Y , I WAJOR LEAGUE ROUNDUP: Tigers Tromp Twins, 9-4 For Direct Classified Ad Service, PhIiome 764-057 Monday through Friday, 12 Noon to 2 P.M. 4 By The Associated Press ST. PAUL-MINNEAPOLIS - Jerry Lumpe lined a tie-break- ing, two-run single and Al Ka- line drove in four runs with two hits as Detroit rallied to defeat Minnesota 9-4 last night. Former National Leaguer John- ny Podres won his second game in three decisions by blanking the Twins on one single for 3'/3 in- nings in relief of starter Dave Wickersham.' Lumpe's hit broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning and Kaline drove in another run with a check- swing single to center. The left- hand hitting Lumpe was the first batter to face the southpaw Jim Merritt, who relieved Twins' start- er Dave Boswell. He lined an 0-2 pitch for his hit. Dick McAuliffe's second triple of the night ignited the Tigers' three-run rally that wrapped it up in the ninth. Kaline's grounder delivered one run and Bill Free- han's single brought two more home. KC Drops Cleveland KANSAS CITY - Kansas City1 bombed Cleveland pitching for 13 hits including home runs by Ken Harrelson and Ed Charles, and handed the American League leading Indians an 8-3 defeat last night. The A's went ahead to stay in the sixth breaking a 3-3 tie on Dick Green's single and Joe Nos- sek's single. During the inning, starter and winner Rollie Shel- don left for a pinch hitter, and Jack Aker took over. Then in the seventh, Kansas City sewed it up with a four-run rally off Tom Kelley, who replaced starter John O'Donoghue in the sixth. The A's made five hits in the rally, including Charles' inside- the-park homer and a triple by Danny Cater. Four N.Y. Errors CHICAGO-The Chicago White Sox capitalized on four New York errors and Tommy Agee's base running for a 6-2 victory over the Yankees last night. Juan Pizarro, who had a five- hit shutout until the ninth, lost his bid for a shutout on Mickey Mantle's homer in the ninth and eventually needed Eddie Fisher's relief help before recording his fourth victory against one defeat. Tha White Sox smro a aid o Koufax Wins Ninth ST. LOUIS-Willie Davis' triple1 and an error by Bob Tolan pro- duced the game's only run, lifting Sandy Koufax and the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 1-0 victory over the1 St. Louis Cardinals last night. t The error in the seventh inning broke up a pitching duel between Koufax and Al Jackson and gave7 the Dodger left-hander his sixth, straight victory and a 9-1 record. He allowed seven hits. Davis became the first Dodger to get past first base when he lined a smash into the corner that bounded off the wall past Tolan, who slipped trying to field the ball. The rookie outfielder then threw badly to second baseman Julian Javier and Davis came all the way around, easily beating Javier's relay. * * * Phillies Win Two PHILADELPHIA - Rich Allenk drove in four runs-three with a 447-foot home run-as the Phila- delphia Phillies rallied for a 7-4 victory and a sweep of a twi-night; doubleheader with the Chicago Cubs last night. The Phillies took the first game 4-3 with the help of a game sav- ing relay from Tony Gonzalez to Dick Groat to catcher Bob Uecker that nailed Lee Thomas trying to score on Jim Stewart's double. With the Phillies trailing 4-1 in the fifth inning of the night cap, Cookie Rojas and Dick Groat singled with one out and Allen drilled a home run into an equip- ment enclosure in the deepest part of center field. *i * * Alou Beats Mets NEW YORK-Matty Alou drove in one run and scored another as the Pittsburgh Pirates downed the New York Mets 3-1 last night. Alou opened the fourth inning with the first Pirate hit off loser Dennis Ribant. He moved to sec- ond on an infield out and scored on a single by Roberto Clemente. In the fifth, Bob Bailey singled, went to second on a sacrifice and came around on Alou's second hit of the game. Dick Stuart's third home run of the second ruined Don Cardwell's shutout bid in the fifth and sliced the Pirate lead in half. But Pitts- burgh added an insurance run in the eighth.
