rHE MICHIGAN DAILY Med School Lists Goals For Future The medical school's senior faculty last month sketched out a broad set of academic goals to guide the school's future develop- ment. There was no "pressing" im- mediate need to adopt the state- ment, Dr. H. W. Bird, assistant dean, explains. Rather, it is a; general definition of objectives that may be taken into account in planning the schoos teaching, training and research programs. In the statement, the medical school acknowledges its respon- sibility for the "preservation, ex- tension and dissemination of knowledge in the sciences and arts of medicine," and points out that the school's character is the product of the personal and intel- lectual interaction of its students and faculty Consequently, the faculty, for the first time in the medical school's 111-year history, set out a concise list of goals. 1) "To create an environment that will attract to it students and faculty of excellence. 2) "To provide optimum oppor- tunities for the student to learn significant facts and principles, to develop independent intellectual discipline and to acquire the skills and judgment required to apply his knowledge to problems of hu- man health and disease-whether as a clinician or a laboratory in- vestigator. 3) "To investigate and evaluate the phenomena of life so that knowledge and understanding are increased. Officials Halt March Against Alleged Vice By The.Associated Press City and college officials of Ter- re Haute, Ind. halted a planned student march in protest against alleged vice to the city hall Tues- day. Students of Indiana State Teachers College claimed Mark I. Williams, dean of men, forbade the demonstration. Two hundred students gathered on campus, ar- guing over the protest with school officials. A current article in the Satur- day Evening Post supports stu- dents claims that gambling and prostitution flourish in the city. Daily Staff Writer Nabs Purse Thief Quick action by Daly sports- writer Dave Andrews, '62, led to the apprehension of a purse snatcher Wednesday night. James Hines, of Ypsilanti ran past the Student Publications Bldg. at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday as Andrews was leaving the building. Hines was beinig pursued by -Rob- ert MacNish and George Oser, Grads, and Josephine Stewart, owner of the purse Hines had stolen. "I chased him into the parking lot and when I had almost caught up with him he slowed down and threw the purse at me. I kept running, caught him and we both fell down," Andrews said.
