'N' PLAIDS

By PETE DiLGRENZI
An alert fan at today's baseball
game with Wisconsin will have at
least one of his ears aimed in
the direction of the first base dug-
out.
If he has good hearing and
perseveres in his listening, he will
eventually hear the sweet, medo-
dious strains of the 1961 Wolver-
ine baseball anthem:
"Those April showers that
come your way,
They bring the rainouts that
hurt in May . .. 0
The voices singing this ditty may
not be of Met quality, but they
will be earnest and true.
Rainouts 'Hurt
For rainouts are the main rea-
son that the Wolverines are not
in a tie for the Big Ten lead with
Minnesota. As of today, the Goph-
ers sport an 8-1 conference rec-
ord. The Wolverine record now
stands at 5-1..

Phi Alpha Kappa moved into
the finals of the first place pro-
fessional fraternity playoffs by
downing Psi Omega 9-2 yesterday
at Ferry Field.
The Dutchmen were led by
pitcher Jim Biel whose three run
homer in the fifth inning broke
the game wide open. Up until the
fifth, the score was 4-2, resulting
from a three-run homer by Dutch-
man John Bower in the third, and
a scattering of hits by Psi Omega.
In the social fraternity ranks,
Paul Raeder pitched a no-hitter
and led Sigma Phi Epsilon to an.
18-0 sweep over Theta Chi. Rae-
der picked up a double in the first
inning, when the Sig Eps scored 7
times, and added a triple in the
second inning when they picked up
another 5 runs. In the heavy scor-
ing second inning, Richie Barth,
Bill Heaphy, and Raeder con-
nected for three consecutive
triples.
Betas Win
Beta Theta Pi moved into the
first place play-offs by downing
Tau Delta Phi 5-0. The Betas were
led by the fine pitching of Jim
Denbo, and strong hitting of first
basemn James Gnewuch, who
picked up two hits.
In social fraternity "B" ball,
Sigma Alpha Mu rolled to an easy
18-2 victory over Theta Xi, and
Phi Gamma Delta overwhelmed
Alpha Tau Omega 15-5. In another
"B" game, Zeta Beta Tau downed
Delta Tau Delta 11-7.
In the only residence hall con-
test of the day, defending "A"
champ Winchell ran' over Kelsey
9-4. Mike Palmisano paced the
Winchellmen with a grand slam
home run in the second inning.
Bruce Baldwin sent all the Kelsey
runs across the plate with a grand
slam homer in the sixth inning.

but the Wolverines are perched in
second, one and a half games be-
hind the Gophers. Both have six
games remaining. Michigan has
today's game with Wisconsin, two
games tomorrow with Northwest-

with Illinois.
Gophers Play Purdue
Minnesota has a single game
today with Purdue, and a double-
header tomorrow with Illinois.
Next week the Gophers face the
Iowa Hawkeyes in a three-game
weekend series.
If the Gophers win all their re-
maining games, they will be sniff-
ing the baseball counterpart of
the roses that Big Ten football
champions smell, and the Wolver-
ines will be forced to smell some
of the May flowers that those Ap-
ril showers brought.
Joyce To Start
In today's game, which will
start at 3:30 at Ferry Field, Coach
Don Lund will start his ace right-
hander, Mike Joyce, whose 4-0
Big Ten won-lost record happens
to be the best in the conference.
The Wolverine formula for a
conference championship has been
narrowed to one of winning all
their games and hoping that the
Gophers lose one of theirs.
There is an alternative, how-
ever. The Gophers could have
three games rained out by May
showers.

DETROIT (A') - Billy Klaus, a
.095 hitter, smashed a grand slam
home run that sparked the Wash-
ington Senators biggest offensive
show of the season yesterday in a
9-4 victory over the first place
Detroit Tigers.
Hot-hitting Gene Woodling and
Dale Long also hit homers for the
Senators, who climbed out of last
place by splitting a four-game
series with the American League
pacesetters.
The nine-run output was two
better than .the Senators had done
in 25 previous games, and their
six-run burst in the fifth inning of
the young season was the highest
of the season.
The Tigers had built up a 3-0
lead against John Gabler before
the Senators launched their at-
tack. Marty Kutyna succeeded

ST. PAUL-MINNEAPOLIS (P)-
The Baltimore Orioles turned
clutch hitting and five Minnesota
errors into an 8-7 victory yester-
day to take their three game series
2-1.
Although Steve Barber was
driven to the showers in a three-
hit-three-run outburst in the sixth,
the Baltimore lefty got credit for
the win. He is now 4-2.
The Orioles pushed over their
winning margin in a three-hit-
five run splurge against Camilo
Pascual, Twins starter, and Ted
Sadowski, in the fifth inning.
Minnesota chipped away at the
Orioles' lead in the late innings,

but reliever Hoyt Wilhelm shut
the gate with one run to spare.
Jim Gentile doubled to center
in the big fifth, clearing the bases
and bringing his runs batted in
total to 33, tops in both leagues.
He scored Dick Williams, who had
singled, Jackie Brandt, who had
doubled, and Brooks Robinson,
who had walked.
