"It's greatest value is in aiding the student to master factual ma- terial," he feels. "Here it can be of more use than textbooks, TV, or lectures since the learner has control over tempo." Teaching machines come in var- fed sizes. Some resemble portable typwriters, and others look like box cameras. The student pushes buttons which correspond to facts and gets 'the stop or go sign from a light. Most of the machines are used to instruct arithmetic at the pres- ent time. "However in such important areas of learning as critical analy- sis, application of knowledge to practical purposes, or creative manipulation of subject matter in new relationships the machine is a poor substitute for a good teach- er," Carpenter says. "If we spend too much time on merely getting information and stfess this at the expense of these more important functions of learn- ing, we are failing to equip the student to meet the problems he is inevitably going to have to Prof. Carpenter contends that our ever-changing society demands the development of learners with intelligent approaches to novel problems. "Skills and techniques which are needed now will become obsolete and hitherto unheard of skills will be demanded." he says. 'U' To Offer New Course Beginning next year, the Uni- versity of Michigan School of Nursing, operating through the Horace H. Rackham School of Graduate Studies, will offer a graduate program in Psychiatric Nursing leading to the Master of Science Degree. The major emphases of the course will be "Preparation in be- havioral and medical science as the background for the practice of psychiatric nursing, and a study of human development and psy- chopathlogic theory," Program Director Edith G. Morgan said. The tentative design for the course demands that a student take 48 semester hours of speci- fied courses -Daily-David Giltrow FINALLY--Ann Arbor climatic conditions to the contrary, the spring blossoms have arrived and many students will feel the urge to abandon the hot library for an evening stroll beneath new leaves and so forth., DISPLAYS:r Technimania To Feature' Atomic Pile Over 100 displays ranging from a tour of the University's atomic reactor to a man-made industrial diamond will be featured at Tech- nimania, the engineers weekend which is being held today and to- morrow.
