THE MICHIGAN DAILY PAGE FM THE MICHIGAN DAILY FAGE FIVE DEMOGRAPHY PROGRAM: Ford Grant Aids Expansion -4' The recent $500,000 Ford Foun- dation grant will be used. to con- tinue theexpansion of the Univer- sity's general training and research in demography, Prof. David Gold- berg of the sociology department and Institute of Public Adminis- tration announced. Funds from the grant, which will become effective in 1962, will double the number of students training in demography, Some of the foreign students currently studying demography are on leave from their govern- ments who will put the students' knowledge to use when they return home. "We hope to train a number of mature students from underde- veloped areas and work with them in establishing indigenous research or training Institutes,"Prof. Gold- berg said. The expanded program will focus primarily on two areas of population research: (1) factors affecting fertility and (2) the growth in metropolitan areas. "Our research interests are not linked to some crash program of population control. We need to know much more about the links between population and economic development before research find- ings can be implemented," Prof. Goldberg commented. The large number of unsuccess- ful efforts to control population growth only point out the need for research to proceed cautiously in this area, he said. Briton To Talk On Education Toby Weaver, Undersecretary in the British Ministry of Education will lecture on "The Aims and Organization of Secondary Educa- tion in Britain," at 7:30 p.m. to- day in the West Conference Rm. Rackham. Weaver, a former teacher at Eton College, joined the Ministry of Education in 1946 after having served at the War Office and the Admiralty. He was appointed to his present post in 1956.
