DET ROIT The University Symphony Band has received an invitation from the USSR to deliver a farewell concert in Moscow this weekend. This invitation to the 94-mem- ber band and their director, Prof. William D. Revelli, of the music school, is an indication of the Russians' complete approval of their performance during their nine-week tour, Lyle M. Nelson, vice-president for University re- lations, said.. Band members are presently finishing their regularly scheduled Russian tour at Baku on the Cas- pian Sea and will return to Mos- cow for their special concluding concert this weekend. Concert Location The concert, to be held in either Tschaikowsky Hall or the Con- servatory of Music Hall, will im- mediately precede the band's de- parture on Monday for Cairo. The tour is sponsored by the United States Department of State. All expenses are covered by the President's Special Interna- tional Program for Cultural Pre- sentation. The University Sym- phony Band was the first band, professional or otherwise, to re- ceive a State Department invita- tion to participate in this ex- change program. Voice Party, PIS To Show HUAC Movie Voice Political Party and the Political Issues Club will co- sponsor the showing of "Opera- tion Abolition," at 3:30 p.m. to- day in the Multipurpose Room of the Undergraduate Library. j The film shows the demonstra- tions staged against the House Committee on Un-American Acti- vities in San Francisco last May. It has been released by HUAC. The program will also include tape recordings made at the riots and a speech by William Mandel who appears in the film. 1 Thousands of Russians have heard the band during their stay in Russia. Overflow audiences at one point in the trip, Kharkow in the Ukraine, called for the ad- dition of a matinee performance. First Cultural Exchange The University musicians were the first cultural exchange group to perform in Odessa, which is located on the Black Sea, and all performances scheduled there were sold out a week before the band arrived on March 21. Trouble with airline strikes and bad weather got the tour off to a bad start before they had left the country. At that time the State Department expressed some concernthat theunexpected de- lay though merely an unfortu- nate circumstance, might not be understood by the Russians. But all such worries seem to have been allayed by the over- whelmingly friendly reception given the band by their large, hand-clapping audiences and their open and gracious hosts. Continuing Tour Continuing its tour of satellite and Mediterranean countries, the group will follow the following itinerary: Cairo, April 17-21; Amman, Jordon, April 22-25; Damascus, Syria, April 26-28; Beirut, April 29-May 3; Nicosia, Cyprus, May 4-6; Istanbul, May 7-10; Sophia, Bulgaria, May 11-14; Bucharest, Rumania, May 15-19; and War- saw, May 20-29. A concert in New York City's Carnegie Hall on June 2 will cul- minate the band's four month tour and celebrate their return home. 'Ul' Committee Plains To View Examinations The literary college steering committee announced Wednesday that it will discuss University examinations at its open meeting to be held at 4 p.m., April 20 in Rm. 1011 A.H. This is to give petitioners an opportunity to participate. The deadline for turning in petitions is noon, April 20. Club To Hear Bowles Speak Sally Bowles, special assistant to the associate director of per- sonnel for the peace corps, will speak about her organization at the Spring Banquet of the India Students Association at 6 p.m. today in the Union Ballroom.
