STUDENT ZIONIST ORGANIZATION presents Rabbi Morris Shapiro of the Yale Archaeological Expedition on Biblical Archaeology in Israel at Hillel Sunday, March 5 8 P.M. The University has established a new inter-departmental program in oceanography. It will make use of existing fa- cilities, Prof. John C. Ayers of the zoology department said. In addition to work here at the Uni- versity, practical work at an ap- proved coastal oceanographic in- stitution on the Great Lakes will be part of the program. Both mas- ters' degrees and doctorates will be offered. Departments participating in the program are meteorology, geol- ogy, zoology, naval architecture, rmechanical engineering, physics, mathematics, language, sanitary engineering, chemistry, public health and others. Study Great Lakes The University's present work in the study of the Great Lakes is also an important base for the new oceanographical program, Prof. Ayers said. Behind the new program is a huge demand for oceanographers. Prof. Ayers says 500 are now need- ed but only 48 will graduate this year. (There are now about 1,500 oceanographical workers.) Marine science, in addition to needing more people, needs per- sonnel who are specifically train- ed for oceanographical work, not workers who have been trained basically In other areas, he said. Increase Importance But, he adds, "the very recent importance of the seas in na- tional defense, in utilization of marine resources, and in questions of disposal of radio-active wastes, has brought home plainly our lack of adequate understanding of the seas." The University's program will be snall at first--only four students are "lined up" for next Septem- ber, when it begins-but it will grow gradually, Prof. Ayers said.
