THE MICHIGAN DAILY mon, Company To Present New Work Abrams, Miller Deplore Lack of Thinking on SGC 11 By DEBORAH BEATTIE Jose Limon and his company who have become America's am- bassadors of contemporary dance, will premiere a new contemporary jazz work, "I, Odysseus" when they perform Feb. 9 at Hill Aud. In "I, Odysseus," which was first seen last summer in tryout at the Connecticut Dance Festival, Limon uses a whole new phase of advanced jazz movement to tell an old tale from Homer. In addition to the Jazz work, Limon will perform "The Moor's Pavenne" and "Night Spell." "Moor's Pavenne" which is con- sidered Limon's masterwork is based on Shakespeare's "Othello" and portrays the tragedy of Every- man. Inner World "Night Spell" deals with the inner world of the sleeper and the conflict between love and fear enacted within the unconscious. Limon, who has won world-wide acclaim for his artistry has per- formed during recent seasons in Buenos Aires, Lima, Berlin, War- saw, Lisbon, London and Paris touring for the state department's International Program for Cul- turalePresentations. After his tour in Europe and Latin America Limon said, "today dance speaks an international) language that leaps all barriers. What I want to do is give an audience an unforgettable exper- ience. Dance should ge a com- munication." New York Show The celebrated dancer and his company will appear in Ann Ar- bor after a performance at the Lincoln Center in New York. His was the first American dance 7 company to be invited to perform at New York's new performing arts theatre. Limon's philosophy concerning the arts is that "the arts shoul elevate and enoble-nothing less. Modern dance delves into man's dilemma, his struggle with -the duality of good and evil. The drama, tragedy, nobility and vio- lence in man's nature all concern today's choreographer.'" In addition to his performance as part of the Professional Thea- tre Program's Great Artists Series, Jazz Program Set by Honors The Honors Steering Committee has scheduled a free jazz concert and discussion at 7:30 p.m. Tues- day in Aud. A. On the program will be a live jazz presentation, with interspers- ed commentary by the musicians. Heading the list of performing mu- sicians will be Stuart Aptekar, '64, an honors student. The program is the first of its kind ever sponsored by a Univer- sity department. If successful, oth- er offerings of a similar nature will follow, according to a committee spokesman. Limon will give a master class Feb. 8 in Waterman Gymnasium. The University dance department has joined with the PTP in the spon- sorship of the company. The box' office for the Limon performance will open at 10 a.m. Monday. The dance program will replace the appearance by the late Charles Laughton originally scheduled for the same date. By RICHARD KELLER SIMON "Student Government Council's problem is a basic refusal to think," according to Council mem- ber Howard Abrams, '63, in a memorandum to SGC. Council member Kenneth Mil- ler, '64, in a similar memorandum, says that lack of agreement among members has created SGC's basic failing-inability to consolidate and use student power. Both statements have been sub- mitted for consideration at next Wednesday's SGC meeting.u, Abrams explains that "refusal to think" applies to three main points: 1) SGC has never specif- ically defined its purpose or rea- sons for existence, 2) Council does not know what it ought to be doing, and 3) SGC members do not take the time or trouble to examine ideas, or to listen to each other or to most debate at meet- ings. Miller says that the "one area where there should be perfect agreement among elected members of SGC is the need for actual de facto student power. A member who does not believe that is being dishonest in sitting on SGC." Once Council obtains the au- thority, he maintains, it should then consider its use. To avoid Save 20% on nBoos with S.B.X. Both Abrams and Miller have requested the executive committee to place an informal discussion of "What is wrong with SGC?" on the agenda.
