THE MICHIGAN DAILY PRESENTED BY THE UNIVERSITY MUSICAL SOCIETY SECOND SEMESTER ARTUR RUBINSTEIN, Pianist ...Thursday, Feb. 7 .... f ... h Board Approves Change In Medical School Title SPECIAL PERFORMANCE: By PHILIP SUTIN The Regents at their January meeting approved four Medical School classification changes de- signed to give more recognition to doctors who voluntarily teach, medical students, part-time, As- sociate Dean Charles Tupper of the Medical School explained re- cently. Replacing the title volunteer instructor, the Regents created the positions of clinical instructor, clinical assistant, associate and full professors for these doctors who teach students in area hos- pitals. These doctors, teaching at St. Joseph Mercy and Veterans Ad- ministrationwHospitals in Ann Arbor and Wayne County General Hospital in Wayne, are to be ap- pointed through regular Medical School-procedures to serve for one year., To qualify for the titles, the doctor must teach a minimum of 50 hours a year. Doctors holding those titles do not hold tenure nor may partici- pate in the University annuity and insurance programs. They are not eligible to sit on the executive faculty of the school, but may attend its meetings as guests. Dean Tupper said he did not know how many doctors would be effected.Hecexplained that each department chairman will recomn- mend appointments for those doc- tors deemed qualified. The num- ber of appointments will be small, he added. "The titles are designed to more adequately recognize the contri- bution to teaching and medical education made by some members of the medical community pri- marily in private practice," Dean Tupper declared. He said these titles are com- monly used by medical schools and are recognized as a mark of pres- tige. . Dean Tupper noted that these doctors receive no or very little pay for their work. Vice-President for Academic Af- fairs Roger Heyns presented the request for change to the Regents praising the services these doctors had made to the Medical School and reiterating the need for im- proved recognition of their work. World-famous pianist Artur Rubenstein will present a special concert under the auspices of the Musical Society at 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Hill Aud.
