It was a difficult decision for her to leave the city with which she and her family have such close ties. Her father is the late Matt Mann, an immortal figure in the world of swimming, who coached the Wolverines for 30 years, starting in 1924. Mrs. Dawson's main reason for leaving is to go to a coaching position where she can have a free hand to develop a women's Varsity swimming team as the cap- stone of a comprehensive women's physical education program. Her goal is to develop a program of women's athletics where sports for women become popular at three levels-physical education, intra- mural, and varsity. "The United States will never beat the Russians at the 1964 Olympics or have a physically fit nation of women without a better program of women's ath- letics in the high schools and colleges," she contended. "Ama- teur sports in this country must be school oriented. Women's sports must have institutional backing to be successful just like men's sports. We need institutionally supported varsity sports for wo- men to raise the level of our intra- mural and physical education pro- grams." Direct Program At Western Ontario, Mrs. Daw- son thinks she will have the op- portunity to develop such a pro- gram. She will be in charge of a five-6ollege intramural system, will teach physical education ma- jors, and will coach the varsity team. "I'm going to a University where they want a comprehensive wo- men's athletic program," she said. "They have had intercollegiate SUCCESS ON YOUR EXAMS!! "Western Ontario has excellent facilities and new ones, including a 50-meter, outdoor, "Olympic" pool, are scheduled for completion within two years." Mrs. Dawson lists two other reasons for making the move to Canada. First, it is much closer to the two Ontario camps she, her husband Buck, and Brother Matt Mann II run in the summer. Sec- ond, she will be able to teach both boys and girls on her new job. Another consideration is that she will be receiving three times the amount of money that she is now receiving at the University. When Mrs. Dawson became an instructor in the women's physical education department eight years ago it was after a lifetime of be- ing connected with swimming and physical education. Her father taught her to swim at age three. She swam her first mile when she was seven. At the age of 21 she took over the direction of her family's girls' camp. Tutors Girls With all this background in the sport, it is interesting that Mrs. Dawson did not actually begin to "coach" girls in improving their speed at various events until six years ago. Against her better judgement, she was persuaded to start the Ann Arbor Swim Club. The AASC was third in the Women's State AAU Champion- ships in its first season. It has now won five straight champion- ships. The best it has done in A' g NEIS4 Suits with the Cum Laude look for your graduation day Look your best as you take the spotlight on your graduation day.
