F (THIS LETTER was refused publication on the editorial page of The Daily for May 17, 1963. The writer paid for its appearance here.) TO THE EDITOR: Prof. Miesel has been reading and grading papers for so long that, in proper academic fashion, he read my letter, registered his grade, side- stepped the basic issue, and ended k with an academic cliche. "Mr. Mike," he says, "should have offered some coherent and constructive criticism." Some approximation of those words generally appears whenever a stu- dent does not write what a profes- sor wants-ust before the C Minus. The reasons I did not attack the idea of "an exhibition that is neces- sarily limited to available works in American galleries" are: first, some- one might send him abroad; and, second, his colleague pointed out in the show catalog that probably not even in Paris could one dip a bucket and come up with a wider representa- tion of current European than in New F York. New York is quite enough if this show ds the result of their honey- dipping. I took no exception to a European show, I did not say that this particu- lar exhibit shows "that the Univer- sity had eben victimized by conti- nental confidence men." This exhibit simply emphasizes an accomplished fact. If New York offers the most representative selection of European painting available, then it is prob- able that New York is the site of a real. if unrecognized and undefined, academy. This exhibit is a Ia mode. Everyone, except painters outside the academy, has just what he or she deserves, an academic show. The issue which Prof. Miesel doesn't face is precisely academicism. He can't probably, not even from the heights of art history-for art history, as Panofsky points out, is a new disci- pline, and professors of art history are too busy undoing the errors of profes- sors past to examine their own. That should be datelined 1913-1963. Per. haps that is why Prof. Miesel called a generalization I used sophomoric, although it is one made in various ways, by Andre Malraux, Waulter Kaufman, Robert Frost, and W. B. Yeats. That is a splendid group of sophomores to be among. I thank Prof. Miesel for the compliment, but regret that it was unintentional, un- warranted, unread. Coherent and constructive criticism. is an admirable thing-in theory; but it is an academic theory. It is a way of closing the mind. Were not such a theory always implicit in such exhi'. bitions, this show might not have been the subtlest kind of disaster, an academic one, a nice one. Kenneth J.
