Field House Below Big

Ten Standards

The Michigan Union Cultural Affairs Committee
Presents:

(Continued from Page 1)

000 and it is considered by some
as the finest basketball structure
in the nation;
Illinois boasts the newest in
Big Ten basketball structures. The
new Assembly Hall has a seating
capacity of 16,128 and was for-
mally opened last March. This
multi-purpose building can be used

for plays, speakers and ice shows
among other things.
The building, a huge circular
structure, stands 12 stories from
the floor to the top of the dome,
and is the tallest building in
Champaign.
Ohio State has perhaps the best;
Illinois, the newest; but Minneso-
ta has the biggest. Williams Arena

seats 18,500 for basketball and,
when converted to a hockey arena
seats 7,800. The Gophers' field
house for track, baseball and foot-
ball seats 2,500.
Indiana is now in the process of
completing one of the most mam-
mouth athletic construction pro-
grams. The new stadium was com-
pleted two years ago and seats
over 50,000. The new Field House,
also finished about two years ago,
is serving as a temporary struc-
ture for basketball. It seats 10,500
and is intended for indoor track.
The Hoosiers are now working on
a new structure for basketball.
Meaw, Jenison Adequate
Northwestern's McGaw Memor-
ial Hall was built in 1952 and
serves both indoor track and bas-
ketball. It has a seating capacity
of 10,000. Michigan State's Jen-
nison Field House was built in
1939 and is also used for both
basketball and indoor track. Jen-
nison seats 12,500.
Elsewhere in the Big Ten, Wis-
consin and Iowa have similar
structures. The Wisconsin Field
House seats 13,800 while the
Memorial Building, which is used
for indoor track seats 1,800. Iowa's

Field House, seating 14,000, isi
used for both track and basket-
ball.
Purdue has a structure similar
to Michigan's. The Purdue Field
House seats 9,600 for both track
and basketball.
Elsewhere across the nation,
most of the schools are in a similar
situation as Michigan. Maryland,
Kansas, Kansas State, Duke and
Cincinnati among others have
modern structures with large seat-
ing capacities. Georgia Tech has
recently constructed a new basket-
ball arena, but with a seating ca-
pacity of only 6,000.

The majority of responses The
Daily received contained remarks
such as: "We are the last place
to look for information"; "We
need one ourselves"; or "What you
have is probably better than ours."
The fact of the matter is Michi-
gan, which once claimed the best
facilities in the Big Ten, now has
to face a giant rebuilding pro-
gram in order to keep up with
the other schools in the confer-
ence.
The Big Ten is surging ahead
as Illinois, Ohio State and Indiana
are setting the pace, and Michigan
must eventually follow.

TONIGHT

f,

LOUISVILLE () - The Darby
Dan Farm's Chateaugay, smartly
held off the fast early pace by
cool-headed jockey Braulio Baeza,
swept outside of the Big Three
leaders at the top of the home-
stretch yesterday and galloped off
with the 89th Kentucky Derby in
an amazing upset.
It was a.Derby first for Baeza,
a slick Panamanian booter, and
for owner John W. Galbreath of
Columbus, Ohio, and trainer Jim-
my Conway of New York City.

Chateaugay stepped home a 14-
length winner over Never Bend,
with Candy Spots third in the
$151,400 classic for 3-year-olds at
ancient CLurchill Downs.
"I got a new baby today," Baeza
proudly proclaimed as he rode
Chateaugay into the rose-bordered
horseshoe which serves as the
winner's circle. "He's my baby
now." The 23-year-old Baeza, who
rode in his first American race
three years ago, is the father of
three children.
