ARY 6,1963 THE MICRIGAN DAILY Faculty Approves Intercollegiate Sports increased in that period; while 26.9 per cent saw a decrease and 22.6 per cent saw no change. It was found that the more an individual had participated or at- tended athletic events, the more emphasis he saw on athletics. "Perhaps the most plausible ex- planation of the data ... is that those who are least closely in touch with intercollegiate athletics believe there is decreased em- phasis more often than do those better acquainted with the situa- tion. This would seem to lend support to the view that there is no decrease," the report says. Increase Policing The faculty also decisively fa- vored increasing policing proce- dures (58.7 per cent) to detect and punish violations of standards in granting financial aid to athletes. Only 5.5 per cent said that at- tempts at policing should be given up altogether. The report went on to analyze the literary college faculty's gen- erally higher disapproval of poli- cies that emphasize athletics such as spring football training, mem- bership'in the Western Conference and the Rose Bowl agreement. In all these areas, the literary college respondents were generally less favorable than other faculties. The report noted, "it would ap- pear that the members of the literary college faculty do not see as close a tie between inter- collegiate athletics and higher education as do the other faculties. Not as often feeling athletics to be an integral part of the University, they tend to be more critical of policies that emphasize them. "It is interesting and important that the literary college faculty is not significantly different from the other faculties on the ques- tions concerning grants-in-aid and the prospective scholarship level of candidates for grants-in- aid. This indicates that the whole faculty is concerned to see to it that scholarship remains the prime qualification for a univer- sity education." The report concludes that the faculty is "reasonably well satis- fied with its system of faculty control and performance of the Board," but it indicated that the faculty is not as satisfied with the present grants-in-aid system and the low prospective grade-point average at which a freshman athlete can obtain a grant. Enrollmnent Rate Grows The enrollment at state nd land-grant universities rose again last fall. According to statistics compiled by the United States Office of Education, fall enrollment for 1962 rose by 7.8 per cent over the 1961 enrollment. National en- rollment rose by 8.1 per cent to a total of 4.2 million degree-credit students. State and land grant universities accounted for 26 per cent of national enrollment. These schools represent just under five per cent of the institutions included in the survey. Madras Bedspreads 72 x 108 $475 INDIA ART SHOP 330 Maynard DIAMOND ENGAGEMENT RING-Never worn; must sell.
