doubled him to third before they
both came home on Skaff's drive.
It was the first game in the
north for Michigan and increased
its overall record to 6-3. Eastern
is 1-2. The Wolverines move on to
Mt. Pleasant tomorrow for a
doubleheader against Central
Michigan.
Coach Moby Benedict praised
Barnhart after the game. "I was
very pleased with the way he
pitched. He was a little wild at
first but settled down to pitch a
fine game."
Hurons Held
The Warren sophomore held the
Hurons to just two hits in his
five-inning stint. Eastern scored a
run in the eighth inning on a long
triple over Spalla's head in center
field and a sacrifice fly.
When he started out, in the fifth
inning, Barnhart struck out the
first two batters he faced on three
and two pitches and walked the
third on a three and one pitch.
His control kept improving and he
was never in trouble except for the
run scored in the eighth inning.
Another Michigan sophomore,
Marlin Pemberton started on the
mound for the Wolverines but was
removed from the game for a
pinch hitter in the fourth inning.
The Hurons jumped on Pemberton
for two runs in the first inning,
one of them unearned, and added
another in the third.
Error Hurts
Pemberton got the first two op-
ponents out in the first inning.
But, the next batter, Captain Dave
Smith, reached first on an error
by third baseman Harvey Chap-
man. This mistake proved costly
as Ron Saunders hit a ball that
cleared the fence in left for the
first home run of the season in
the Michigan park.
Saunders earned the third of hist
four RBIs in the third inning
with a sharp single that drove in
Terry Hurley from second base.

Skaff scored Michigan's first
run in the second inning. He was
safe at first on an error. After ad-
vancing to second on Pete Adams'
single and third on an infield out,
he scored on Joe Jones' single.
Add to Lead
Michigan added an insurance
run in the eighth inning. Jones
reached second base on an error
and was chased home on Dick
Honig's single moments later.
Jones, Honig and Adams each
had two hits for the Wolverines.
Saunders had two hits for the
Hurons. Skaff and Barnhart
knocked in two runs apiece for
Michigan while Saunders made all
four of Eastern's RBIs.
Michigan's next home game is
Tuesday against arch-rival West-
ern Michigan. The Big Ten season
starts on the weekend of April 26-
27 for the Wolverines as they
travel to Champaign and Lafayette
for two games..

TORONTO (A)-Eddie Shack's
goal in the final 7 minutes sent
the Toronto Maple Leafs to their
second straight Stanley Cup hock-
ey championship last night in a
hard-earned 3-1 victory over the
Detroit Red Wings.
The Leafs, winning the best-of-
seven series for the National Hock-
ey League's prized trophy four
games to one, broke a tie that had
lasted for nearly 33 minutes of
play on Shack's goal at 13 min-
utes, 28 seconds of the final period.
Kent Douglas, playing defense
when Carl Brewer was hurt, start-
ed the winning play with a long
slap shot from the blue line. It
struck several players on its way
to the goal before Shack deflected
it past goalie Terry Sawchuk.
Toronto took a 1-0 lead late in
the first period on Dave Keon's

first of two goals and Detroit tied
it in the first minute of the second
period on a goal by Alex Del-
vecchio,.
The teams played cautious hock-
ey from then until Shack's winner.
Detroit came within inches of
tying the score in the final minute
with a Toronto man in the penalty
box. The Red Wings had six skat-
ers on ice and Norm Ullman fired
a puck toward an open net while
goalie Johnnie Bower was lying
on the ice with Detroit's Gordie
Howe on top of him.
But the bouncing puck hopped
wide of the cage.
With just five seconds left, Keon
fired the puck the length of the
ice into the vacated Detroit net.
