This breakaway from black, navy and charcoal will be accom- plished by a greater reliance on light to medium grays, in solids, especially sharkskins, and in pat- terned effects. Glen plaids will remain popular while seersucker will climb to the ranks of popularity in all fields of fashion, suits included. Three Buttons Three button suit coats will re- main in command in this field with two button suits catching up, and the one button concept also growing in popularity. Along with the new develop- ments in suit coats will come unique treatments of lapels. Notch-shawl lapels will mark a departure from the sharp lapel lines of the past. For the forward looking Beau Brummel, this spring will afford rounded-front shorter-length jack- ets with half-inch stitching, and, get this, some shoulder padding and waist padding in addition to narrow flaps for the slightly angl- ed pockets. P s Pleatless Slim looking and pleatless pants will remain the vogue in suit fashions below the waist. Both ex- tension waistbands and side tabs along with traditional belt loops and vertical side pockets will be seen on this year's spring and summer suits. Spring and summer suits this year will be made of bantamweight wool tropicals, gabardines, Dacron mixtures and polyester-worsteds. Seersucker as pictured on the right will make advances on the traditional dacron-cotton combinations pictured in the middle and on the left. Patterned Sport Coats Parade Vertical Look Bv LATRENCE KIRSHBAUM I By THOMAS DRAPER, EDWARD HERSTEIN, and ANDREW ORLIN Brighter and bolder shirt pat- terns will challenge the imagina- tion of collegiates this spring. Tab and button down collars continue to share dress shirt pop- ularity, but the patterns are get- ting bigger and the colors bright- er. Replacing the standard white and solid colored shirts are pat- terned shirts sporting yellow, blue, or gold stripes and checks. The width of the stripes is expanding to three-eights and one-half inch. Vertical Stripes In sport shorts this spring, the patterns are primarily verticle stripes rather than last fall's plaids. The backgrounds are be- coming lighter and the patterns bolder. The shape of both dress and sport shirts are changing to a more tapered form. No longer will there be wind-catching bulges of cloth above each hip. Local retailers say the tapered look is here to stay and parallels the shrinking waistline of the hu- man tor o. Knit shirts will retain their pop- ularity on campus, both for their neat appearance and that male saving characteristic, "No Ironing Necessary." Pants are again this year among the most popular items in men's wear. Besides being a virtual neces- sity, new styles have been bring- ing men in droves to trade them for pants. Among the most popular of the new spring wear are white levi's. Offspring of the traditional blue levi's, they are exactly what their name implies and have been sell- ing like hotcakes for leisure wear. Tapered Trousers Continental style trousers-tap- ered with no belt loops or cuffs- are capturing about 50 per cent of the market in casual wear. Cottons and cottons with syn- thetics are the most prevalent ma- terials. They are machine wash- able and are generally favored in neutral colors-charcoals, blacks and greys. Formal Wear, Comes, Goes; Tuxedo Stays I-- LEVI'S SLIM FIT I No, it's not a circus. Even so, it may look like one when the University's most virile are parading this spring in colors virulent: red or blue-striped seer- sucker sport coats. T HE UNIVERSITY SH OP SACK'5- :.I~FTH AWENUE 332 So. State Street, Ann Arbor New York, White Plans, Springfield, Garden City, Chicago Detroit, Beverly Hills, Ann Arbor, Princeton, New Saver, Cambridge strolling there will be no surpass- ing the new vertical look. But color and pattern are only half the glory. These coats are light as they are bright, as wash and wearable as they are stare- able. The material is puckered seersucker, a light linen fabric aired together in a crepe weave. Pectoral Precision These coats are designed to pectoral precision for the natural look. The shoulder slopes unpad- ded down a medium lapel to the front that really confronts: three boldly-stated, white-plated but- tons flanked by straight-flapped pockets. The body rhythm just oozes through expressionless, untapered waist and curves around back to to the center-vented tail pipe. The real hunk of man will match his seersucker to light pas- tel slacks (white or blue) and navy, black or maroon club ties. If he knows he's cool, the choice for ties will range into broad stripes of subdued blues. Range, Rage Subtlety and novelty prevail in the new line of checked dacron and cotton sport coats. The colors range and rage into sexton plaids or subdue into more solid beigey reds, tans, light blues and greens. Here too the material is cool as in cloth. The linen weave pro- vides plently of breathing and wreathing room. And wrinkles cease in front of the wash and wear treatment. These coats are engraved in ivy styling. Like brother seersucker, the natural shoulder and waist are set off by the classic three-button facade announcing medium lapels. Club, Rep There's only one way to be tied down in these toppers: hushed ties, club or rep. Summertime and the living is breezy. That's why a smart invest- ment is the light yet substantial dacron and wool sport coats. The wearing season for this apparel unparalleled is April to October. The coats adopt to weather like a thermometer. These jackets stay calm color- wise in soothing navys, light- blues or grays. Again the emphasis lies in the naturally tailored look: the subtle shoulder, moderate cut- away lapel, straight flap pockets. So spring into the swing-the bright vertical swing-of things. Regular levi's and khakis are also still high on the popularity charts, of course, while cordu- roys are only popular for winter wear. In dress clothes, again neutral colors predominate. Grays, olives, and browns in wool worsted and wool-dacron combinations are most popular. Cuts tend toward the long, cas- ual look-pleatless front, medium width legs just long enough to touch the top of the shoe. Plaids and very subdued pat- terns are by far the most predom- inant in all fabrics, and a new nylon zipper is beginning to make an appearance in all lines. The horizontal stripe will accent this year's style in belts. Elastic Belts Elastic belts, which allow the wearer to gain or lose weight with- out having to buy a new one, will again be very popular. The colors will tend toward the lighter shades with the stripe setting off the pastels. The classic leather belt will be displayed in its usually prominent position. As one store manager noted, "We will always have them, always sell them, and they will never change." With minor shifts in style, leather belts are the same from year to year. However, one thing which has changed this year is the size of belt buckles. Both in elastic and in leather belts, there is a trend toward larger buckles. They are not becoming ornate with raised designs but they are becoming "DIK. massive and masculine" nieces of metal. Desert Boot GaiJns Appeal By STEVEN HALLER According to one Ann Arbor merchant, the most singular style trend in men's shoes this spring is a rapidly increasing interest in that Foreign Legion mainstay, the "desert boot." This is a light-weight, sand- colored shoe made of reversed leather which looks like suede. Desert boots come in ankle-high or oxford styles, lined or unlined; both have two-hole ties to hold them firmly on the feet of any Ann Arbor "Legionnaire." There is no indication of a. re- turn to the former trend of fancy black-and-white or brown-and- white shoes this season. The most popular shoe for dress-up occasions will be the narrow-toed light- weight black oxford, for that "Continental" flair. Penny Loafer The most popular type of .shoe for everyday use continues to be the loafer, of which several kinds are available. One type which is making a comeback is the "penny loafer," so called because of its use in a fad which requires that a coin be inserted in a special strap on the front of the shoe. No particular reason for such a fad has yet been made public, except merely to chalk it up to the unorthodoxies of the average shoe- oriented mind. Hush-puppies are still popular, too. These brushed pigskin shoes tare made in several styles. They are particularly popular as golf shoes because they are light- weight, water-repellent and com- fortable.
