Notices should be sent in TYPEWRITTEN form to Room 3564 Administration Building before 2 p.m. two days preceding publication. TUESDAY, MARCIH 19 is I I T T i i l 1 i 2 t i By DEBORAH BEATTIE "In the entire area of 'what do people do?' we have come to a serious crossroad in this century," Prof. Deborah Bacon of the Eng- lish department said yesterday, speaking at a "Salute to Women Who Work Week" luncheon. In a talk entitled "If You Can't Lick It,'Join It," Prof. Bacon said the present problem of automation resembles the period in history when whole nations moved away from the practice of slavery to the concept of free labor. At tlhat time people also thought that there would never be' any-I thing for these people to do. But these fears did not materialize, she pointed out. Idle Wives As an example of the changes due to automation, Prof. Bacon said that in the last 20-25 years the household servant has disap- peared. The resulting difficulty has not been a problem for the former household servants, but for the housewife who has benefitted from the machine. She is left with little to do besides play golf and bridge, Prof. Bacon commented.I Lane Receivesj Funds To Aid Speech Pt oject By BARBARA LAZARUS Prof. Harlan Lane of the psy- chology department has recently received a $200,000 grant from the Language Development Section of, the United States Office of Edu- cation to continue and extend re- search on a project called Exper- imental Analysis of the Control of Speech Production and Percep-1 tion." The experiment, which is known as Project Answer and has been operating for the past 20 months, has carried out experiments in such areas as speech perception, discrimination learning, auditory, generalization, programmed in- struction, foreign accent and per- ception of emotion in speech. A description of the project stated that "the research has been directed toward the interface .be- tween psycho-acoustics and learning theory (especially oper- ant conditioning) and toward findings that have significance for the basic disciplines involved and application to second lan- guage learning." A by-product of this research effort has been the training of graduate and undergraduate stu- dents in pertinent research tech- niques and the conceptualization of instrumentation for accurate and efficient control and measure- ment of learning and perceptual processes. The proposed extended research will include four areas: reinforce- ent of vocal topography, speech (auto-instructional device), con- trol of auditory attention, and perception and production of af- fect in a second language. The project began Feb. 1 and will end 24 months after the starting date of the contract. It has been.relocated from the base- ment of Mason Hall to the Be- havior Analysis Laboratory at 1315 Hll St. Essay Contest Topic Selected The subject for the 1963 Broom- field Essay Competition will be "Autonomy vs. Responsibility; New Syntheses" Prof. Luke K. Cooperrider of the Law School, chairman of the Broomfield Awards Committee announced re- cently. The competition is open to alumni and students of the Uni- versity and awards $1800 to the winner. The award is provided by the late Archibald Broomfield, who wished to stimulate thought on subjects related to good citizen- ship. PROF. DEBORAH BACON ... serious crossroad "The machine has taken overe and there is no doubt that itx should, but then what do you do when work is done for you?" shee asked.t Pointing out that the answer to this lies in being more valuable than the machine, Prof. Bacon emphasized' that women must not try to solve this problem by beingf better machines. Because womenf are not as efficient as machines which don't need coffee breaks,t they must stress creativity, rshe said. Man Shall Prevail Warmth, flexibility, humor and genuine interest in others make human beings 'interesting and make it possible for people to en-1 dure the mechanisms they havet created, she added. Prof. Bacon predicted that it will not be women who create tre- mendous machines or do much of the programming, but that their; role will be to interpret the work of the machine and thus be a link between it and humanity. To fulfill this role well a woman needs the flexibility of education. She must learn not to be a ma- chine but a complex individual, emotional but controlled, she said. "Every road goes two ways and we must follow the right road- and follow it in the right direction -to becoming flexible, warm peo- ple, unafraid of the machines that we have been clever enough to create," she explained. Schneider Cites Need for Hike In City.Taxes The city administration is hid- ing the need for raising the tax rate, Democratic mayoralty can- didate Dr. Albert F. Schneider said recently. "The City Planning Commission in its' report on the capital im- provement program indicated the impossibility of an effective plan for park and recreation expansion, fire protection and street improve- ments without a substantial in- crease in city revenue," he said. The city adrinistration has been forced into some large-scale fi- nancial juggling in order to get by this fiscal year. "This kind of raiding' on the budget, coupled with claims of 'city services as usual,' is not re- sponsible public activity. It also results in the inability to properly plan for such areas as the central business district and the Huron Parkway," Dr. Schneider said. $31000 STUDENT-FACULTY JET FLIGHT June. 12-NYC--London Aug. 22-London--NYC NO 5-6765 Day Calendar 8:30 a.m.-Arson Control Seminar- Rackham Bldg.
