We believe that acceptance of the principle of non-dictation does not preclude University participation in the formation of the moral sense of the community. There can be no general principle preventing the Univer- sity from taking a position on matters which effect the interests and moral concerns of its members. Surely if faculty members were being excluded from the housing market simply because they worked for the University, the University would object without hesitation. We believe that the proposed housing legislation vitally affects the University. Our world-wide prestige can not but be affected by the treat- ment accorded foreign students and visiting faculty whose /skin does not meet the standards presently applied by some of our community's citizens. Our position in the world educational community depends upon our ability to attract distinguished scholars and teachers to Ann Arbor, regardless of their race, creed or nationality. We also believe that an infringement of the human rights of any one of the members of t'he University is an affront to all of us. We commend the administration for their expressed concern for the fair housing of students and staff. We commend the administration for its efforts to combat discrimination. We hope that the administration will not allow its obligation to avoid improper interference in community affairs to prevent effective presentation of the University's concerns.
