THE MICHIGAN DAILY Five Upsets Highlight NFL Opening For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2m4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M By PETE DiLORENZI Five upsets, three of them of a more stunning nature, than the other two, highlighted the open- ing Sunday of this year's National Football League competition. The two milder upsets saw the Philadelphia Eagles last years NFL champions, turn back the the Cleveland Browns, 27-20, and the Detroit Lions outplay the Green Bay Packers, 17-13. The Eagles' victory over the team picked to dethrone them just about dispelled the rest of the Eastern division's hopes that Son- ny Jurgensen could not handle the quarterback job bequeathed him by Norm Van Brocklin's retire- ment. Jurgensen threw touchdown passes'to Bobby Walston and Tom- my MacDonald and. completed a commendable 11 of'17 passes.- Defense Carries Lions The Lions utilized' the same crunching ground attack and tight defense that enabled themi to win six of their last seven games last year. Nick Pietrosante and Danny Lewis led the Lions on the ground, i , while Yale Lary kept the Packers bottled up close to their goal line. On three different punts, the Lions downed Lary's boots on the Pack- er seven, two, and one foot line. The Lion defense also held at the close of the first half, when the Packers were forced to try a fourth down field goal after having three plays with a second and goal sit- uation on the Lions' one foot line. Rookie Shines In the day's most stunning up- set, the fledgling Minnesota Vik- ngs unveiled a new star, rookie quarterback Francis Tarkenton of Georgia, who passed for four touchdowns and ran for one as Norm Van Brocklin's charges romped to an astonishing 37-13 upset of the Chicago Bears. The 21-year-old I quarterback completed 17 of 23 attempted passes for 250 yards. Tarkenton threw one scoring pass each to Bob Schnelker, Jerry Reichow, Mcllhenny, and Dave Middleton. None of his 23 passes was in- tercepted, but the Viking defen- sive backs picked off four Bear aerials. In another stunner, the Dallas Cowboys won their first NFL reg- ular season game by scoring 10 points in the final 56 seconds to topple the Pittsburgh Steelers, Big Daddy and all, 27-24. The Dallas quarterbacks, Eddie LeBaron, and Don Meredith, picked holes all af- ternoon in the shoddy Steeler sec- ondary. The loss was followed by an announcement yesterday after- noon by Steeler Coach Buddy Parker that he would quit at the end of this season if the Steelers did not win a divisional champion- ship. GOLF NOTES: Newcomb, Wains Title Michigan golf captain Bill New- comb returned to Ann Arbor last In the last of the day's sur- prises, the St. Louis Cardinals humbled the stumbling New York Giants, 21-10-and this without John David Crowe. Sam Etchever- ry, the Cards' import quarterback from the Canadian Football Lea- gue, seemed recovered sfrom the shoulder injury which had both- ered him throughout the exhibi- tion season, at least on short passes. He completed 11 of 24 passes for 76 yards. Charlie Booed Charlie Conerley, longtime hero in New York, was booed by the dis- appointed Giant fans as he and the rest of the Giants couldn't seem to get their attack going. Conerley was replaced by Lee Grosscup, for- mer Utah All-American, who drew a round of cheers from the crowd. In a game which went true to form, the Baltimore Colts defeated the Los Angeles Rams, ,27-24, as former San Francisco 49er half- back Joe Perry gained 106 yards. The Colt defense "solved" the Ram offense after the Rams had gotten their hands on the ball only five times-on four of which they had scored. The Colts shut them out in the second half, however, and won it on Steve Myrha's fourth quarter field goal. Lenny, Moore, moved occasionally from a slot- back or flankerback to a tight run- ning back this year, caught a TD pass and skirted left end for 38 yards on a running play. 'Frisco' Romps The day's only other action saw the San Francisco 49ers shoot their "shotgun" at will through the defense and defeat the hapless Washington Redskins, 35-3. John Brodie led the 49ers with four scoring passes. AFL Standings I &-*--. -I LEARN Td RIDE with Mr. Alexander Duffield, U. of M. graduate and for- mer riding instructor at Culver Mili- tary. On August 24, Newcomb was the winner of the Indiana Open tour- nament, and he also advanced to the fourth round of the National Amateur at Pebble Beach, Calif. Newcomb, who has lettered in golf for two years, played in the number three position last year behind Captain Joe Brisson and Dick Younberg. Both Brisson and Youngberg have graduated; thus Newcomb is an almost sure bet to take over the number one po- sition. 215 Ashley, MiI HURON RIVER STABLES Equitation School Ride For Credit! William Phone NO 8-7066 J6 11 * * * The golf team's hopes for 1961 were dealt a serious blow, when it was learned that Mike Goode, one of last year's regulars would not be able to play this spring. Goode has enrolled in Dental school and because of his lab schedule, golf is almost an impos- sibility. According to coach Bert Katzenmeye, "Mike still wants to play, but I can't possibly see how he can do it; I've just about dis- counted the fact that he will be with us." Very unimpressive golf was played this weekend in the an- nual fall Invitational Golf Tourna- ment. New freshman candidates, last year's freshmen, and last year's varsity competed. Tom Clark, a sophomore from Ann Arbor, was the winner with a score of 210 for the 72 holes. Clark scored 79-78- 76-77 for the inidividual rounds. Dave Cameron, another sopho- more from Detroit, put together- the best two rounds of the tourney. Cameron scored a 75-74 on Sun- day.
