A field 60 yards by forty yards, one-hand tag between the should- ers and the knees, seven men on a team, no stances for linemen, and no roll-blocking are some of the major rule departures from football that have been made to insure both safety and expediency for Michigan's football program. Yet few would dispute that IM football is exciting and hard- fought. Each year the schedules are planned to achieve maximum util- ization of manpower and fields available as well as to provide a variety of competition for each participating team. Separate Divisions Defending champions are plac- ed- in separate divisions and the 'M' Stadium Ready for Grid Season The 101,000 capacity Michigan Stadium has been touched-up over the past summer and is ready for the seven-game home schedule which opens Sept. 30 against UCLA. According to University Building and Grounds man Robert Hurst, preparation work this years has been completely routine. The tunnel received its first coat of paint when workmen spread 45 gallons of white on the cement walls. The scoreboards at either end of the field also have a fresh coat of paint. Minor changes were also made in seating numbers. remaining teams are shifted to new divisions. Each year athletic managers from all teams meet to discuss scheduling and to review the rules and policies affecting the football season. This year's meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 30. Last year in residence hall competition, Kelsey House of South Quad rolled to champion- ships in both the "A" and "B" divisions. Pulling an identical feat, Sigma Alpha Epsilon walked away with honors in the social fraternity "A" and "B" divisions. SAE will attempt to defend its title when the season opens on Tuesday. Pro Fraternities Play Professional fraternities will be- gin play on Wednesday. Nu Sig- ma Nu, a medical fraternity, cap- tured the league title in last year's competition.
