Purdue won only two individual events but picked up 16 points over Michigan in the two relays. The Wolverines were disqualified in both races when the last man of each relay team left the starting block before his teammate hit the end of the pool. Purdue would have won the freestyle relay anyway but the Boilermakers medley team was second until the Michigan dis- qualification put them in first place. Wins Diving John Vogel, National AAU champion, was first in the 3-meter diving event by less than four points over Wolverine Ron Jaco. Boilermakers Drowned 400-YD. MEDLEY RELAY: 1. Time -3:38.90. -I The Boilermaker had 270.15 points to Jaco's 266.75. Paul Attar of Michigan placed third with 226.2 points. Diving in exhibition for Michigan was Pete Cox with 250.75 points. The only other Purdue first place was Mike Fryer in the 50- yard freestyle race with Boiler- maker Jim Hirst taking second. Purdue placed a swimmer in sec- ond place in two other events. Nears Record Mike Reissing turned in the best performance of the meet by almost breaking Fred Wolf's varsity 200- yd. backstroke record. His time of 2.04.89, recorded by the automatic timing device, was very close to Wolf's mark of 2:04.4. Wolf did not swim in the backstroke race but swam backstroke in the medley relay. In the 200-yd. butterfly event, sophomores Bob Shaefer and Ern Mannard swam good races for Michigan. Shaefer led from the start and took first place with a late burst of speed as Mannard almost caught up to him in the last 50 yards. Winning time was 2:08.88. Michigan took first and second places in both freestyle distance races. Warren Uhler and John Dumont slammed the 200-yd. free- style event. Roy Burry and Win Pendleton shut Purdue out of the two top places in the 440-yd. free- style. More Sweeps Similarly Jon Lundin and Bob Rodes in the 220-yd. individual medley and Jerry Bodolay and Mike Hinnan in the 200-yd. breast- stroke kept the Boilermakers be- low second place. Lauren Bowler was another winner as he was first in the 100-yd. freestyle sprint. An exhibition 400-yd. freestyle relay between three Michigan teams was captured by four fresh- men.- Jim Riutta from Flint, John Johnson from Grosse Pointe, and Tom Burns and Lanny. Reppert from Pennsylvania were the win- ners. They defeated a second place team of Lauren Bowler, Bill Darn- ton, Steve Thrasher, and Frank Berry and'a third place team of Ed Bartsch, Lee Corby, Jim Kerr, and Dennis Floden.
