THE MICHIGAN DAILY Language Courses Expand, Improve For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'til 11:30 A.M. premium placed on conversation for its own sake. Where the aim of the language departments is improved conver- sation skills, use of the language laboratory is regarded as neces- sary and almost indespensible for purposes of practice. Prof. O'Neill says the oral em- phasis particularly in the first semester, would be very difficult without the aid of the lab as a place where students may practice out loud for considerable periods of time. "It is very difficult to do well in basic courses without this exposure to material outside of class," he says. Perpetual Snafu While regretting the "perpetual snafu" of crowding in the lab, Prof. Pott agrees on its usefulness, since it has an impersonal at- mosphere where students can. speak and contrast their pronun- ciation with that of the native speaker without being embarrassed by their mistakes. The Russian department used to use two forms of lab work, the regular lab and a "'live lab" where small groups of studenats practiced pronunciation with a native speaker. Prof. Mersereau says although students made fewer responses in the second type of lab, there was an advantage to having an in- structor present to correct mis- takes students sometimes do not catch when listening to the tape recordings. Conversation Practice Conversation practice for stu- dents of Japanese and Chinese comes partially in the lab 'but mainly from the extra class ses- sions and coffee hours held each week. Language lab attendance is not, compulsory in the department. With the exception of the 10 per cent of entering students who can meet the University's four- semester proficiency requirement, all literary college students have at least one semester of foreign language study before they grad- uate. But the number of students who elect to take a third and fourth year is increasing steadily due both to rise in interest generally and to the fact that more and more entering students have al- ready begun studying foreign lan- guage in high school. Widely Offered This is particularly true of Ger- man and the romance languages which are more widely offered in high schools throughout the coun- try. It is beginning to be true of Russian also, but the percentage of students entering with advanc- ed training in Russian is still very small, Slavic languages depart- ment chairman John Mersereau says. Classics department Chairman Gerald F. Else says the majority of freshmen entering the Latin program have studied the lan- guage in high school. Since so many students enter with ad- vanced credit, enrollment in sec- ond year Latin is usually about twice as heavy as in beginning sections. Gradual Rise Several of the language depart- ments are experiencing a gradual rise in enrollment, but particular- ly those whose subject has recently become especially important to American students because of the world situation. Prof. Joseph Yamagiwa, chair- man of the Far Eastern languages department says the undergradu- ate program in Chinese and Jap- anese has grown from about 18 students in 1937 to 130 at present. Enrollnent in elementary Rus- sian has increased from 40 stu- . See 'INTENSIFIES,' Page 8 FOREIGN CAR SERVICE We service all makes and models of Foreign and Sports Cars.
