NEW YORK--The Administra-
tive Counlcil of the City Univer-
sity in mid-December lifted its ban
on Communist speakers.
The move climaxed a long series
of protest moves. by students both
at City University and on other
campuses.
Realizing' that the legality of
the action has been questioned, the
Administrative Council stated,
"Until there is further judicial or
legislative determination of this
question, the educational authori-
ties on each campus are legally
free to approve or disapprove in-
vitations to members of the Com-
munist party of the United States
as they were heretofore."
The council's report continued
by saying that the Administrative
Council would be liable to prose-
cute only if the granting of per-
mission to speak could be linked
to criminal intent.

NEW YORK--Student govern-
ment at Columbia University was
voted out of existence as of Jan. 1
in a three day referendum held
prior to the Christmas recess.
The proposed charter for a Stu-
dent Assembly to replace the Board
of Student Representatives was
defeated 690-378. The Jan. 1 lim-
it was decided last May when the
student body voted against contin-
uing the constitution of the
Board.
MOUNT PLEASANT - Eighty-
four faculty members at Central
Mibhigan University signed an
open letter, dated Dec. 25, to Pres-
ident Kennedy suggesting that at
least one naval vessel be assigned
to the task of transporting ex-
change students between the Unit-
ed States and other countries.

standing of the problems of other

ALBUQUERQUE - Approxi-
mately half of the University of
New Mexico faculty. early in De-
cember signed a petition oppos-
ing the investigation of the "Lo-
bo," the campus paper, by the
Board of Regents.
A letter accompanying the pe-
tition said that the faculty believes
that their views and those of the


Regents are basically the same in
that both groups are interested in
maintaining freedom of the stu-
dent press.

SPOKANE-A move which plac-
ed the budgeting of the $32,000
student activity fee at Gonzaga
University in the hands of a stu-
dent board of control was hailed
as a significant advance in the
operation of student government
by Ed Haasl, president of the As-
sociated Students, in a December
statement.'
The Rev. John P. Leary, S.J.,
president of the university, said
that the plan will allow the stu-
dent body to shoulder some of the
university's burdens.

* CONAKRY, Guinea-The High
Court of Conakry on Nov. 24 sen-

tenced five members of the Guin-
ean Teachers Union to jail terms
ranging from five to ten years
each.
The instructors were found guil-
ty of editing and distributing "a
mendacious and subversive docu-
ment" and of attempting to divide
and demoralize the young.
Three days later, following stu-
dent demonstrations in Conakry
protesting the action, the govern-
ment ordered all schools closed.
LOS ANGELES - Steve Murry
and Ed Klein of Sigma Alpha Mu
fraternity at UCLA early in De-
cember invited Premier Nikita
Khrushchev to the Rose Bowl.
The message was intended to ex-
press the true meaning of Christ-
mas, the two explained and was
intended to show peaceful inten-
tions at the yuletide season.
