THE MICHIGAN DAILY 'lta College Opens in Midland . Michigan's newest community college, Delta.-College at Midland, accepted its first freshmnan class this fall. Opening of the institution clip maxed several years of work by a group of tri-county, community and educational leaders. Plans were first conceived in 1952 when Midland and Saginaw began thinking in terms of sep- arate community colleges. Similar College A similar school was already in operation in Bay City, and the plan for a single school to serve Midland, Bay City and Saginaw was formulated in 1955, from the plans for the three individual in-, stitutions. It was voted into exist- ence by the taxpayers May 28, 1958. Details for the actual, construc- tion of Delta College were worked out by a nine-man board of trus- For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Below Average Surveys over the past two years have shown that college attend- ance among students from the tri-county Saginaw Valley area is below the national average. Lo- cal parents are hoping that the new college will help to raise this average. Leaders of industry, agricul- ture and commerce have expressed the belief that the key to future prosperity for the growing area is higher education. Cite Resources They cite the chemical indus- try centered in Midland and Bay City, the automotive industries in Saginaw and the vast potential, available to the Saginaw Valley since the opening of the St. Law- rence Seaway. They are "looking for young people, the new talent coming from colleges and universities to spearhead and then uphold the inevitable advance of all phases of life in the community as throughout the nation." Products of technology are par- ticularly visible at the new col- lege, especially in the audio-vis- ual aids which will be the media of education for the 1,800 students entering this fall. Electronic Systems Franklin Bouwsma, director of educational television and radio for the school, emphasizes the fact that Delta will have electronic teaching systems which will com- pare favorably with those used by any other college in the nation. Four television units will be in operation for both daytime and evening classes. The instructor in a TV-equipped room will need only to select his channel in ac- cordance with the program need- ed to supplement instruction.' FM Available For its radio signals, Delta will be equipped with eight radio channels. Eighty will actually be available if the college decides to use the FM system, Bouwsma said. Several different subjects will be broadcast for anyone who wishes to listen. The language laboratory will be served entirely by audio aids. The college will feature two separate curricula. The, College of Letters (liberal arts) will be sim- ilar to the University's literary _ .- - - WELCOME BACK STUDENTS ! Earlier this yar, a billwhich would have added the third and fourth years to the present two years of junior college died in the State Senate Education Commit- tee. They consider it a certainty that the issue will eventually be re-introduced in the Legislature.
