V, DECEMBER 14,'1961 THE MICHIGAN DAILY ~, DECEMBER 14, 1961 THE MICHIGAN DAILY a .a,..az SPEAKING IN FRENCH: Seminars Aid ACWR Goals For Direct Classified Ad Service, Phone NO 2-4786 from 1:00 to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Friday, and Saturday 9:30 'till 11:30A.M. t By SANDRA SANDELL "We feel that our foreign lan- guage seminars are a step towards several of the goals of Americans Committed to World Responsibil- ity," said Sandy Gilden, '63, the organization's secretary. The seminars bring to those who attend information concerning the problems of underdeveloped na- tions. They also help bridge the gap that now exists between Americans and international stu- dents," Miss Gilden said. The seminars are conducted en- tirely in French, have centered on the Algerian question and on Af- ricans' impressions of the United States. Idea Originated The idea for the discussions originated at an ACWR meeting in October, where the Crossroads Africa project was discussed. Several Africans wanted to ask questions of the participants in the program but did not feel com- petant enough in English. Finally, one of them began to ask ques- tions in French, which were trans- lated and answered. It was felt that seminars held in French would enable these students to exchange ideas. The members on the first panel on Africans' views of the United States and of Americans were Kaffi Yame, Spec, from the Ivory Coast and Felix Maukoko, Spec, of the Cameroons. The audience, half of which were Africans, took an active part in the discussion. Covers Algeria The second seminar covered the Algerian problem from the Al- gerian, Guinean and French view- points. The participants included Norodin Ait-Doussine, Spec, from wa Delicious Hamburgers...15c Hot Tasty French Fries...10c Triple Thick Shakes... 20c 2000 W.Stadium Blvd. Algeria, Prof. Jean Carduner of the romance languages depart- ment, and Fode Carera, Grad, of Guinea. "The seminars are not intended to be debates, but discussions bas- ed on the exchange of ideas," Miss Gilden explained. The atmosphere of the sessions has contributed to their success. Due to the interplay between the audience and the panel, all those attending have felt themselves to be an integral part of the discus- sion. People in the audience have given speeches as long as those by panel members, she said. Seminars Aid Students Miss Gilden also said that the seminars have helped the inter- national students feel at home and have given them knowledge that should prove to be useful when they return to Africa. At the discussions they can speak in their national languages and conse- quently feel freer and more com- petent. The Africans are glad to see that American students are interested in the problems that are so near to them and are willing to discuss them in the Africans' national language. English Language In- stitute students gain particularly because they have less contact with the campus than other stu- dents, she said.- Series Will Continue The series on Africa will con- tinue into next semester and will include such topics as: African- American relations, United States foreign policy toward Africa, emerging nations, aspects of Af- rican cultures, African unity, and the Congo situation. America's cities are full of houses. America's forests are full of trees. America's rivers are full of water. But it is not houses and trees and water that make America great; it is curiosity--the constant quest to find answers-the endless, restless "Why?" "Why?" "Why?". Therefore, when I was told that Marlboro was a top seller at colleges from USC to Yale, I was not content merely to accept this gratifying fact, I had to find out why. I bied myself to campuses in every sector of this mighty land. First, I went to the Ivy League-dresse., of course, in an appropriate costume: a skull-and-bones in one hand, a triangle in the other, a mask-and-wig on my head, a hasty pudding in my chops. "Sir," I cried, seizing an Ivy Leaguer by the lapels, which is no mean task considering the narrowness of Ivy League lapels, but, I, fortunately, happen to have little tiny hands; in fact, I spent the last war working in a small arms plant where, I am proud to say, I was awarded a Navy "E" for excellence and won many friends-"Sir," I cried, seizing an Ivy Leaguer by the lapels, ."how come Marlboro is your favorite filter cigarette?," and ADMIRAL TABLE RADIOS FOR ONLY $9.95 X7 C-TED STANDARD SERVICE FRIENDLY SERVICE IS OUR BUSINESS It is fall change over time. " TRUCKS AVAILABLE 01 For RESULTS "I'm glad you asked that question, Shorty," he replied. 'Marlboro is my favorite filter cigarette because it is the filter cigarette with the unfiltered taste." "Oh, thank you, sir!" I cried and ran posthaste to several campuses in the Big Ten, wearing, of course, the appropriate costume: a plaid Mackinaw, birling boots, a Kodiak bear and frost-bitten ears. Spying an apple-cheeked young coed, I tugged my forelock and said, "Excuse me, miss, but how come Marlboro is your favorite filter cigarette?" "I'm glad you asked that question, Shorty," she replied. "Marlboro is my favorite filter cigarette because the flavor is flavorful, the flip-top box flips and the soft-pack is soft." "Oh, thank you, apple-cheeked young coed," I cried and bobbed a curtsey and sped as fast as my little fat legs would carry me to several campuses in the Southwest, wearing, of course, the appropriate costume: chaps, canteen, and several oil leases. Spying a group of undergraduates singing "Strawberry Roan," I removed my hat and said, "Excuse me, friends, but why is Marlboro your favorite filter cigarette?" "We are glad you asked that question, Shorty," they replied., "Marlboro is our favorite filter cigarette because we, native sons and daughters of the wide open spaces, want a cigarette that is frank and forthright and honest. We want, in short, Marlboro." "Oh, thank you, all," I cried and, donning a muu muu, I set MERRY CHRISTMAS HAPPY NEW YEAR from DANIELS 201 South Main Street i~ 1 Who needs mistletoe?
