Strack Reviews F1rst Four Games CHARGE BAD CALLS: Rozelle Raps Skorich, Eagles By TOM WEBBER After splitting even on four games, two home wins and two losses on the road, Michigan bas- ketball coach Dave Strack was ready to reflect on the perform- anice "of his squad and what he expects in the future. His tean opened the season with an impressive win over Ball State and then let a small Pennsylvania squad outbattle them on the boards. Against Butler, the second road game in four days, the team held its own on the boards, but finally succumbed to the superior shooting of the Bulldogs. Finally last night against Den- ver they played their worst game to date but still had enough to best the Pioneers. How does your offense shape up? "John Oosterbaan has been shoot- ing very well so far and Bob Can- trell looks like he is coming around. I feel that Cantrell will shoot bet- ter than he has. I also don't think that Tom Cole has played as well as he can. He was playing better ball at the end of last year than he has so far." Oosterbaan has led the team scoring in all four games this year. Is he going to be the' big gun this year? "I would like to think that the rest of the guys will be able to pick up the scoring if they're needed. I don't think this team can depend on one man. We will have to be a balanced scoring club. We haven't been feeding Oosterbaan more than the others, it's just that he's been sinking a greater per- centage of his shots, a pretty good percentage in fact (over 50 per cent). He's actually been taking fewer shots in some games." * $* You were worried about the de- fense before the season. Has your early evaluation changed any? "I've been satisfied with some play and not so satisfied with others. Wme're not aggressive enough on man-to-man defense. We're going to have to get better individually." The zone defense was very effec- tive against Butler. Do you plan to resort to. more use of it? "It's possible that we'll use it again. We'll use it in particular -lases. I think, however, that you have to be able to play a good man-to-man Triandos May Get Traded BALTIMORE (P)-If the Balti- more Orioles grant the wish of catcher Gus Triandos to be traded, it's going to be to another Ameri- can League Baseball club. Lee Macphail, general manager, said today he has about given up trying to make a deal with the National League in order to play a good zone. It's still a matter of how good the players are defensively." * * * Depth was also considered a pre- season problem. How is this si.tua- tion after four games? "We're get- ting hurt more and more. We've already lost Jim Ludwig and Hiram Jackson, and now Doug Herner and Bob Brown are hurt." What is the extent of their in- juries? "Ludwig had his knee oper- ated on last Friday and will prob- ably not be back any more this season. Jackson will have the cast removed from his knee next Wed- nesday. We'll have to wait and see how he comes around. Herner has a hip injury and is playing at about only 70 per cent efficiency. Brown had a badly sprained ankle." How does your team stack up in rebounding? "We're not strong enough on the boards. We'll have to work on getting better position when we play some of those big, strong teams. Harris has been the best rebounder for us." What is the eligibility status of Harris and Oosterbaan? They have only two years of eligibility. They are both transfer students (Ooster- baan is from Hope College, Michi- gan and Harris from Alcorn Col- lege (Mississippi)). The Big Ten allows only eight semesters of eligibility, and you have to estab- lish a year of residency, which Harris and Oosterbaan did last year." -Daily-Bruce Taylor HEY! COME BACK HERE - Tom Cole, Wolverine forward, watches the ball slip out of his hands on a rebound try. Center Bill Mumma, Pioneer starter, also jumps vainly in pursuit of the elusive sphere. John Oosterbaan (34) and Bob Cantrell (30) give Cole moral support., NEW YORK (P)-Commissioner Pete Rozelle of the National Foot- ball League cracked down on Philadelphia Eagles' officials today for "statements emanating in Phil- adelphia in the last two days." In line with league policy, Ro- zelle would not say whether he had fined any Eagle brass. Any an- nouncement must come from the club or individuals. Surprise Action Rozelle's action came as a sur- prise.. It was announced by Jim Kensil, the league's public relations director, at a weekly luncheon meeting held by the New York Giants, who beat the Eagles Sun- day 28-24 to clinch at least a conference tie. However, Eagle Coach Nick Skor- ich and general manager Vince McNally had been critical of the officials' calls in the Giant game, particularly a 15-yard roughing- the-kicker penalty against the Eagles with about 6%/2 minutes to go. Illegal Catch Skorich said in Philadelphia that his game films showed the final HOLIDAY GREETINGS TO ALL!! Our 10 Barbers Say: "Your patronage has been greatly appreciated. McNally quoted Mike Wilson, chief of the league's officials, as saying referee Ronnie Gibbs made an incorrect call on the roughing- the-kicker play. "It should have been a 5-yard penalty (for running into the kicker)," said McNally in Phila- delphia. "I called up Mike Wilson to tell him about it and he said: 'I know it: I already told Gibbs he blew it." In New York, Wilson had only a "no comment" to answer Mc- Nally. At Joliet, Ill., where he spoke at a luncheon, Gibbs said "the kicker was knocked down and if I didn't call the play the way I did, people would say 'Gibbs, you've lost your guts' and it would be time for me to quit." Gibbs said he doubted that Wil- son made the comment attributed to him by McNally. DRIVING TO FLORIDA OVER THE HOLIDAYS? or to Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia? Adding color to the meet will be Tom Robinson, Dick Cephas and Les Bird.,All three are eligible only this semester, so none will see conference action, as the first conference meet is next semester. Leps Runs Two Ergas Leps will anchor the en- kries in the half mile and thq three-quarter mile (run tonight' instead of the full mile), but he will not be the only one to watch. From last year's team, Charlie Aquino will pace him in the half mile, while in the three-quarter, Leps' principal opponent will be sophomore Dave Hayes, the prime candidate for, Dave Martin's slot on the mile slate. The hurdles will be without Ben- nie McRae tonight, as he is still ailing with a shoulder injury suf- fered in football. Dick Thelwell and Cliff Nuttall will be the prime choices in the meet tonight, there- fore. The quarter mile will pit veter- ans Carter Reese, Len Cercone and Bill Hornbeck against only the clock, while the 600 yd. run will feature Johnny Davis, a sopho- more, and Sam Dyke, a freshman. Romping Robbie The - dashes should be very colorful also. Robinson should lead the field, but sophomore Mac Hunter has broken the tape in 6:3 in the 60 yd. dash, very close to Robinson's time. Robinson will be challenged by newcomer Ken Burnley in the 300 yd. dash. The pole-vault will show two ex- tremes: the vets, Steve Overton and Rod Denhart and the new blood Ed Hingston and George Wade, both excellent prospects. Ray Locke's replacement in the shot is George Puce who has tosses better than 50 feet, already. The high jump will' feature Sophomore All Ammerman, who has jumped 6'5" since high school. Steve Williams who has been in- eligible since last fall is expected to be ready next semester, though he will not jump tonight. Outdoor Winner Doug Niles, winner of last spring's Western Open Meet will oppose Bird in the broad jump. Assistant coach Elmer Swanson sums up this year's squad very well, "We aren't really re-building this season despite the number of new men. There are veterans is nearly every event, but these men are no where near the whole team. These sophomores are good and will pick up points for us this season."
