NEW TRACK FEDERATION:
Coaches Ask NCAA Support

The big showdown between the
NCAA and the AAU over the con-
trol of amateur sports in this
country may be just around the
corner.
With the backing so far of 98.6,
per cent of'its members, the Na-
tional Collegiate Track Coaches
Association yesterday asked the
parent body, the NCAAexecutive
council, to support its resolution
to take immediate steps in estab-
lishing a new track and field fed-
eration.
No Elimination
The new federation, as the
NCTCA has explained from the
beginning, would not eliminate the
AAU but merely replace it as the
final authority and put it on equal
footing with the NCAA, armed
services, high schools and at-large
groups.
The AAU, meeting this week in
Washington, D.C., will receive a
statement from the XCTCA this

weekend and is not expected to
give in without a fight. "They'll1
do something," laughed Michiganc
Coach Don Canham in a delib-t

Canham, the NCTCA's executive
vice-president, has been conduct-
ing polls of the coaches since Sep-1
tember and was very pleased atC
the almost unanimous support thet
coaches have been giving ther

ing majority," Canham explained.
Federation Aims
Among the aims of the federa-
tion, besides selection and train-
ing of teams for international
competition, are improving age-
group athletics, doing national re-
search and bringing up "other
areas where a preliminary nation-
al poll indicated the U.S. is fall-
ing behind other countries," ac-
cording to Canham.

(Meanwhile, the Associated
Press reported that the NCAA
council in Kansas City urged
coaches to boycott AAU meets un-
less it agrees to take a subordinate
role in the new federation.
Talk It Over
(AAU President Nick J. Barack
has offered to sit down with NCAA
officials next Wednesday and try
to solve the dispute. He com-
mented he was still waiting for a
list of specific complaints against
the AAU from Walter Byers, NCAA
executive director.)

and Jorgensen will watch tonight
is the play of Moudy and Read-
nour who appear to be the Card-
inal's key men. Jorgensen noted
that John Oosterbaan would prob-
ably guard Readnour with Tom
Cole being assigned to Moudy.
Good Shooting
Besides team depth, shooting
ability is supposed to be the Card-
inals strongest asset who averaged
78.3 points per game last year' as
compared to Michigan's 66.7 aver-
age. A-repeat of the poor shooting
by the varsity against the fresh-
man Tuesday-night could be dis-
astrous.
