A 7 SAE, 'Phi Delts Meet for Titles AL RENFREW' new season-new problems a 'A a7- f J By JULIE CARSON It's going to be the Mudbowl all over again next week, as Sigma Alpha Epsilon and Phi Delta Theta clash in the first place playoffs of both "A" and "B" divisions of In- tramural social fraternity football competition. SAE "A" defeated Sigma Phi Epsilon 20-8, and its "B" team trounced Delta Sigma Phi 32-6. Led once again by. the passing of Jack Mogk, SAE "A" kept pressing as Dennis Spalla scored two touch- down, Fred Roeser one, and Joe Jones the extra point. Joe Merullo and Jack Rashleigh scored for Sig Ep. Tough Game This was the toughest game so far for SAE this year, as Sig Ep fought hard to give SAE, its tra- ditional rival, its first defeat in fraternity football competition in four years. ~ In the "B" competition, SAE quarterback Dick Honig starred, running for two TD's and passing for two others to Don Kilber and Doug Roeser. Dave Campbell went all the way on a punt return for another SAE score. Dick Day picked up Delta Sigma Phi's only points., Phi Delts Roll Phi Delta Theta "B" rolled over Delta Upsilon 12-0 to make its bid for next week's finals against SAE. Mike Harris and Park Malcolm scored a TD each for the Phi Delts, In other "B" competition, Lamb- da Chi Alpha shut out Phi Kappa Psi 14-0. Bruce Galbraith and Mike Knapp scored a touchdown each for Lambda Chi and Ron Mulder picked up the extra point. Meeting Lambda Chi next week In the second place playoff finals' will be Theta Xi as they upended Sigma Nu yesterday 28-6. Dave Fauri and Tim Bennet scored one TD each and Chuck Costello two. Don Persons scored the extra point. Rick Shefibein tallied the only Sigma Nu points. Pistons Finally Win a Game Maple Leafs Defeat H In third place playoff semi-final competition, Sigma Phi Epsilon defeated Trigon 14-6. Tom Swaney and Dave Cameron scored for Sig Ep and Tom Lynch for Trigon. Chi Psi held Phi Sigma Delta Charles Hunt posted a TD each for the winners. By The Associated Press DETROIT-The Detroit Pistons finally scored their first victory of the National Basketball Associa- tion season, last night as they cooled the New York Knicker- bockers, 111-95. Detroit had lost its first four games while the Knicks had won four out of six. After falling behind in the ear- ly moments, Detroit recovered to the first period. Then New York went ahead momentarily but 13 straight points, eight by Bob Fer- ry, shot Detroit into a 35-24 ad- vantage. The Knicks bounced back to within two of a tie before anoth- er Piston bombardment provided them with a 55-45 halftime mar- gin. In the third quarter Detroit took a 64-52 lead only to see it fade. Toronto, with a 5-2-1 record, is third, four points behind the Canadiens. Mahovlich scored his game- winner at 1:22 of the third per- iod with an assist from Red Kel- ly. It made the Toronto lead' 3-1 and offset Marcel Bonin's goal from Montreal with about eight minutes remaining. Bobby Pulford, and Bob Nevin scored the other Toronto goals while Claude Provost scored Mon- treal's, first goal. With an assist on Bonin's goal, Provost pushed his season scoring total to 17 points-one behind the league leader, Andy Bathgate of the Rangers. Bathgate got his 18th point against Cihcago Tues- day night. The game was a close one from the start and the big crowd got its money's worth as players of both clubs handed out some hefty bodychecks. Referee Frank Ud- vari called 16 penalties-eight for each team. Frosh-Sophs Win Gym'Meet In an inter-squad gymnastics meet, the Freshmen-Sophomores defeated the Juniors-Seniors 57- 52. Gil LaRose took four first places in free exercise, rings, side horse, and parallel bar. Gary Erwin won the trampoline event; John Ham- ilton placed first in tumbling; and Sandor Freseka, a freshman, took the high bar event.
