NSA Region Holds Conference, Workshops at 'U'
of a National Union of Students,
the .effect upon other countries
and universities of such Unions,
the relation of the NSA to the
International Student Union and
the International Student Com-
mittee, and the NSA stands on
political, and international issues.
More on a local plane, the mi-
grant workersworkshop discussed
education- of migrant workers'
children, the role of students in
helping the workers (mainly
through reports and investigations
of conditions and the raising of
controversy on the subject), and
the place of Detroit schools in
helping other smaller schools with
the problem.
Student Government
The question of effective stu-
c'ent government, the role of a
student government representa-
tive, and the function of student
government in relation to non-
campus issues were discussed in
the fifth conference, with the
"coimunity form" of government
the accepted mode.'
Complete analysis of the or-
ganization, a definition of its pur-
pose, and a knowledge of consti-
tuents' opinions were recommend-
ed as qualities needed in repre-
sentatives.
if the student governument is to
be accepted, the workshop agreed
that the government must hav:
nearly complete authority over
social activities, some sort of con-
trol over student organizatiokl
funds and foreign student organ.
ization, and a vote in work for'
college facilities.
No Agreement
In regard to political and in-,
ternational issues, ' no general
agreement was reached, due to cer-
tain delegates' belief that if a
person were elected on basis of
leadership, he should have no say
in non-campus actions, while
others believed that student goo.
ernment would be the only ef-
fective means of expressing stu-
dent opinions to non-campus and
foreign interests.
In addition, attention was given
to the question of whether stu-
dents are actually committed to
their chosen organizations, the
unfortunate blocks in solution of
administrative problems in the
issues and the importance of eval-
uation and creation of informed,
articulate opposition groups.
