Han son Upholds Defense Of Pharmacy in Hearing A date to remember ... -r-- SUBJECT: Caterpillar Interviews for Engineers DATE: Nov.: 3 If you're about to receive your' B.S. or M.S. engi- neering degree, Caterpillar Tractor Co. is interested in you. By FREDERICK ULEMAN "The professional status of the pharmaceutical practice is at stake in the current antitrust litigation," Arthur B. Hanson, co-counsel for the defense in the criminal anti- trust indictment brought against the Northern California Pharma- ceutical Association, said yester- day. Pharmacy Regulation The proceedings are part of the government's "attempt to regu- late pharmacy as it has regulated business since 1890," he said. Un- fortunately this attempt has de- generated into an "apparent poli- tical struggle," resulting in much misinformed publicity. Impetus for the hearings was generated in Northern California where medical services are con- stantly "under the gun because of high cost." The cost is not ex- tremely great over the long time span, but is noticed because it comes all at once, he explained. Several Issues Both the government and the defendants agree that there are several main issues. Among them are the questions of whether or not the dispensing of prescrip- tions 'is an interstate commerce matter and whether or not phar- macy is a "learned profession" or the mere retailing of drug prod- ucts, Hanson noted. The answers to these questions will determine the fate of the pharmaceutical professions, he said. Emphasizing the professional aspects and minimizing the busi- ness parts will be "the salvation of pharmacy," Hanson warned. Hanson's lecture, "Antitrust Looks at the Pharmaceutical In- dustry," was delivered as part of the annual "Pharmacy Lectures." }A f NORTHROPISCMN t Representatives from NORAIR-NORTRONICS will visit the campus O0CTOBER 30 to discuss career opportunities In the Los Angeles area.
