SUNDAY, OCTOBER 22,1961 THE MICHIGAN DAILY Wolverines Rebound with First Big Ten Wini :g :: >:i :... .: ': .. .... Early Michigan Safety Gives Winning Margin; Glinka's Passing Attack Clicks Against Purdue 0) (Continued from Page 1) McRae's breakaway, Michigan moved consistently deep into Pur- due territory. Fullback Bill Tunnicliff's charges up the middle spearheaded the thrusts after Glinka's passing had loosened the Purdue defense. Hav- ing the best day of his career, Tunnicliff continually ripped off large gains and finished the after- noon with a net gain of 90 yards in 19 carries. Regardless of his efforts, one drive misfired when McRae fum- bled on the Boilermaker two-yard line and another went awry when Bickle's field goal attempt went wide. A third was stopped on downs at the Purdue 36, and the seemingly insignificant first quar- ter made the final difference. Two Boilermaker fumbles set it up, the first coming after they had taken the opening kickoff and marched to the .Michigan 38, and the second after forcing the Wol- verines to punt. Score Safety Halfback Tom Boris misplayed Scott Maentz's low kick at the Purdue 15 and was finally dropped on the eight by Ken Tureaud. A quarterback sneak got one and then DiGravio, in an attempt to cross the Wolverine defense, pit- ched behind Boris on the goal line. Boris ended up with the ball, but the Wolverines were on the score- board, 2-0. Less than five minutes later Michigan had a 9-0 lead, largely on the strength of Glinka's right arm. Unable to move on the ground, Glinka hit McRae for 10 and a first down on the Purdue 43. Five plays later the duo re- peated the performance for 31 yards after a holding penalty had pushed Michigan back to the Pur- due 47. Two shots by McRae at right tackle moved the ball to the one* where Dave Raimey carried for the score. Miss Chance The Wolverines missed a golden opportunity to break the game wide open two plays after the kickoff. The fourth Purdue miscue1 of the period gave Michigan the ball on the Boilermaker 24, but a fourth down pitchout to Raimey strayed and Purdue took over at the 26. Purdue, however, too good a football team to be kept down for long, scored midway in the second period and before it was over threatened to take the lead. DiGravio, running from the tail- back slot in Mollenkopf's surprise of the day-the "modified shot- gun" offense--chugged through a host of Wolverines to score from the Michiagn 13 and cut the mar- gin to 9-6. Omer Ohl's kick made it 9-7. Drive Stalled Then late in the period another fumble stalled a second drive on the Michigan six. Reserve quarter- back Gary Hogan was jarred loose from the ball on a keeper play and taclke Will Stawski fell on it to preserve the Wolverine lead. Summing up the game in the locker room, Elliott called it "a good one to win." Special praise went to Glinka, who threw for 179 yards on nine completions in eleven tries. Only a pass dropped by end Bob Brown in- the first quarter and a near-touchdown completion to McRae flying down the sideline in the third quarter kept him from a perfect day.
