3ER 21, 1961 THE MICHIGAN DAILY P Demand Cancel Bomb Test APPLAUSE-Maurice Thorez, general secretary of the French Communist Party, is applauded as he addresses the Soviet Communist Party Congress in Moscow yesterday. France is one of the 84 coun- tries represented at the 22nd Party Congress. Say Soviet Single Intent TO Harass Denmark Points Out Threat to Mankind UNITED NATIONS () - Six nations close to the Soviet nu- clear test area demanded ,yester- day that the United Nations con- front Premier Nikita Khrushchev immediately with an appeal to call off plans for a 50-me'gaton mon- ster bomb blast. Per Haekkerup of Denmark, one of the six, charged before the United -Nation's main political committee that Khrushchev had only one purpose: "to enhance the fears and concern of our already harassed peoples. "Can any statesmen take the responsibility for carrying out such a test explosion with the risk it involves to mankind--only in or- der to offer unnecessary proof of his country's strength?" he asked. Propose Priority Haekkerup proposed that the committee delay its debate on how to stop further nuclear test- ing by all the major powers and give priority to a resolution spon- sored by Denmark, Sweden, Ja- pan, Iceland, Norway and Canada. The resolution called upon the General Assembly to note with deep concern Khrushchev's state- ment that he intended to test the huge bomb at the end of the month. It solemnly appealed to Khrush- chev to cancel the test in view of the "immensely increased adverse effect of such an explosion on, the health and welfare of the world population." No Justification The Danish delegate said So- viet fears of western aggression "could never justify the explosion of this monster bomb. That would serve no scientific or defensive purposes. "We all know that the Soviet Union has it in her power to use, if she so wishes, the most destruc- tive atomic weapons. We need no, proof of that. The results of Soviet space research are most impres- sive and have convinced the world of the high technology reached by the Soviet Union." He said the six nations had taken the initiative to make the appeal to the Soviet Union "be- cause we consider that the regions neighboring the polar circle would be the areas most exposed to the immediate fallout risks of such an explosion. We recognize, however, that the risks embrace all human- ity."
