THE MICHIGAN DAILY Si a THE MICHIGAN DAILY STJND Matching Vests Return to By PHILIP SUTIN Fashion Parade <.4 , B A strong comeback of ,vests, highlights this year's trends in men's suits, local clothiers agree. The vest, usually of the same color and material as the suit, has been returning to the fashion scene during the last year after a twenty-year absence. "The use of the vest was discon- tinued in World War II as a war measure to alleviate a material shortage. So men became accus- tomed to the comfort and lack of constriction of vestless suits," a local clothier explained. He also cited the British influ- ence of sweater-vest for the de- mise of the vest. Its return was described by an- other salesman as a cyclical thing which has caught on with stu- dents. Vigorous Interest A "vigorous interest" in vested suits had been noted in local stores. One reported that these suits accounted for about 25 per cent of its suit sales. Prices on vested suits are rough- ly the same as those of other suits because the stores are absorbing the additional cost of the vest. Dark blue is seen as the major color this season. It will usually be combined with black, another shade of blue, orcharcoal gray. Some salesmen think that the new emphasis on dark navy blue will make little dent in students' suit color preferences. The olive shades, especially the darker ones, browns, and greys are still popu- lar with University students. Suit styling will remain un- hcanged this year. "Students are conservative in their selection of suits," one clothier explained. The natural shoulder, three but- ton suit is still standard. The lapels may be taped a bit this year. Suit pants style is also stable. The plain, pleatless waist is still the fashion for the student. Suits will look "dressier" this year. A preference for all wood, hard-finished suits accounts for this look." Combinations of wool with syn- thetic fibers, especially with or- Ion, are on the decline. Local stores noted a decided lack of interest in this type of fabric. Corduroy suits are also dimin- ishing in popularity, although local stores differ as to the extent of the change. One store noted that these suits were selling well, but several others said they are dropping off. Solid colors are competing with herringbones and plaids. A trend in solids is to have blended colors woven together without a specific pattern. Clothiers Acknowledge Evening Wear Trends CONSERVATIVE STYLING-Vested suits, conservatively styled, are still the favorite on campus. Often the vests are only barely noticeable as in the suit above. Hats too are experiencing something of a renaissance. Out of style since after the second world war, they are now sometimes seen on campus. Tuxedos ana dark suits continue to set the standards in men's evening year. The shawl collar tux still leads the notch collar type in popular- ity. The type with braided lapels is not popular in college circles due mainly to price. Tuxedo fabrics are getting light- er. Wheras the tux material for- merly weighed 16 ounces it has now been reduced to 9 ounces. Black, charcoal and dark navy blue are all acceptable in suits. Olives and browns are definitely out. In cost they run between $70- $150. Vests are very popular during the day and with uits at night. Solids and the foul rd pattern are in style this year. If a vest is worn with a dark suit it must be match- ing: otherwise it appears that you are trying to make the suit into a tux. Solids and the foulard pattern are also setting the pace in cum- berbunds. Checks and large pat- terns are losing favor this year. With matching tie thrown in they cost about $10. Stiffbosom shirts are out this year with pleated shirts replacing them in popularity. These have French cuffs, no button down col- lar and no tabs. They run any- where from $8.50-$25.00 in price. If this is too expensive a regular white shirt can be worn with a dark suit. 4 1r-= -- _________-____ i Simple Accessories All SWEATER PAKS and YARNS Nationally Advertised in Leading Magazines Beautiful New Color Combinations in all Weights of Yarns cat S4op S}4 row in Popularity w By GERALD STORCH Men's accessories seem to be off the cuff this year. Cuff links are usually worn mainly with padded shoulder suits and in strictly formal wear. Men buying natural shoulder, conservative suits and sport coats coats and switching to the but- toned cuffs. However, tie clip sales are not dropping off, the clerk continued. Most of the purchases are of the plain, unornamented clips, to go with the conservative, subdued sport coats and unflashy ties. In contrast, men attired in the padded shoulder, more debonair suits sometimes appear with a gaudy tie clip, with a monogram or ornament such as a goldfish sculpture stuck on the end. The more restrained tie clips usually never go beyond a single color check o'r stripe etched in the metal. One new item in accessories which is selling very well, the clerk commented, is a tie pin which pierces through the tie and the shirt and is anchored firmly behind the shirt. 4 ......:.................. ...................................,................................... ..........".".o"..".c.:soo.v"":rs.,.,..r...:"o:"r:w:.::vaa ::.w:::.v......::::.."::::: .vrao::: :":-:"::a:.: : :"c::.: :w..........:::w:::r.::. ::r:.:::. :::::.:: :::: x.",".v: xnw: :v:: r. c".
