Colleges which have been named to share the grant are Carleton College, Northfield, Minn.; Gou- cher College, Baltimore; Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa; Hofstra College, Hempstead, L. I.; Reed College, Portland, Ore.; Swarthi- more College, Swarthmore, Pa.; Wabash College, Crawfordsville, Ind.; and Wellesley College, Wel- lesley, Mass. Wellesley will receive $706,000 -- the largest immediate payment. Initial grants will total $13.6 million. To be eligible, colleges must raise $33.2 million on their own within three years. The im- mediate payments from the grant will total $3.5 million. The colleges selected had to give evidence of their high quality and capacity to improve their effective-' ness and, extend their influence. There art about 500 liberal arts-' private colleges which are eligible for consideration. The gramt reverses the trend toward aiding universities with science programs. The Ford Foun- dation stressed the importance of the liberal arts study in making the grant., Henry T. Heald, president of the Foundation, cited the importance of liberal education in a free so- ciety in explaining the purpose of the grant.
