lution for the January convention.
Another idea proposed by the
coaches is that a committee of six
will pick the Olympic coaches.
Many of the coaches also feel
that a man should be an Olympic
coach only one time, and after
that he will be through. He would
be eligible for no foreign tours,
and although he may serve on aI
selection committee, his foreign
coaching is over.
In a story appearing in this
week's edition of Sports Illus-
trated, many reasons were cited
for the slow breaking away from
the AAU. The major boiling point
has been the bungling of inter-
national affairs. It came to a head
early this summer when such stars
as Hal Connoly and Parry O'Brien
refused to make a trip to Russia
because of the length of the trip.
The AAU insisted that they could
not just compete against the Rus-

sians, but would have to make the
complete tour.
Canham felt that the United
States had never sent its strong-
est team. "You can't fool around
when you're playing the Rus-
a guy like O'Brien wants to com-

The feeling of the coaches is
that they are better fitted for
the administration of track and
ield events than the AAU execu-
tives in New York.
Funds No Worry
Asked if he thought the coaches
could handle the administrative
functions, Canham replied, "We
run the National Collegiate track
meet, and its one of the best run
track meets." "We're not worried
about funds," he said, "That's the
least of our problems."
