TAE MICHIGAN DAIIN lcers Cinch Second Spot with 5-3 Win 'M' Coliseum Will House WCHA Playoffs March 1-3 play a two-game series with North Dakota at Grand Forks while MSU and Michigan play in a home-and- home series. A Michigan sweep coupled with a Minnesota sweep would leave Minnesota in undisputed control of fourth. If Michigan State splits and Minnesota sweeps, there will be a tie, and the position will be decided on total goals for and against each in league play. Assured of Second With last night's win, the Wol- verines assured themselves of sec- ond place in the WCHA. Even a loss to Denver wouldn't have made any difference in the playoff structure for Michigan. The playoffs are set up so that the first and -fourth teams .play each other the first night, and the second and third place teams play the second night. The two winners and two losers clash the third night, and the two teams that will represent the WCHA are picked by a league selection com- mittee. Even if Michigan had lost last night, they still would play Den- ver, since neither- team had a chance for first or fourth place. Denver coach Murray Armstrong is rather confident about the play- offs. If there was to be an award for the most improved team over. the season, Denver would cer- tainly get it. Poor Beginning After beginning with four losses to first-place Michigan Tech, Den- ver's sophomore-laden group has suddenly found itself. Its prune accomplishment was "knocking off" Michigan. Also Denver's two wins iat MSU last weekend were a major blow in Michigan State's downfall. "The boys have certainly come along way," said Armstrong, "Our goalie, Larry Beauchamp, was sort of a question mark at the begin- fing, but he's come along." Beauchamp probably had his worst hour during the first Micl . igan Tech series when he allowed 16 goals in two night. His im- pressive performances against Michigan within the last two weeks have proved that Michigan will have its work cut out in its opening playoff game. No Favorites As for the playoffs, Armstrong doesn't have any pre-picked fa- vorites. "I think Tech man-for- man is the strongest team this year, but in this league any one of the top four teams can easily knock off any other team in .any given night." The coach of the defending NCAA Champions, was also the Junior Hockey coach of Michigan captain Red Berenson. Comparing the Berenson of today with the Berenson of junior hockey, Arm- strong said, "when I coached Red he was a 'good' hockey player, to- day he is a 'great'. hockey player." -Daily-Bruce Taylor ABOUT TO SCORE-Michigan wing Jerry Kolb is about to score the last goal of the game at 19:52 of the final period. The goal gave Michigan an insurance tally and increased their victory margin to 5-3. CAGE ACTION: Wisconsin Trips Ilin MS-U Loses to Iowa <~ By The Associated Press MADISON-Wisconsin retained undisputed possession of second place in the Big Ten basketball race by fighting off a late Illi- nois rally last night for a 103-101 victory. Ken Siebel scored 28 points and Tom Hughbanks 27 in leading the Badgers to their eighth triumph in 10 conference starts. The Badgers led by 13 points with 4/2 minutes to play. Then Hughbanks was sidelined with five personal fouls and the visiting Il- lini began a determined drive which just missed. With 20 seconds left, Bob Starnes cashed a pair of free throws for Illin, 's to make the score 103-100. Then with four sec- onds remaining Lan Ostrom fouled Bill Small Small converted his first free throw, then deliberately bounced his second off the rim to give his mates a chance to top the re- bound. However, in the wild scramble, the ball took a sharp bounce out of bounds and the gun sounded. Wisconsin trails only undefeat- ed Ohio State in the Big Ten. Il- linois, which had a chance to tie Wisconsin for second, dropped to fourth place with a 6-4 record, as Purdue moved up with a 7-4 mark. IOWA CITY - Iowa outlasted Michigan State 59-51 last night in a cold battle of Big Ten also- rans. The Hawkeyes, ahead 28-18 late in the first half, dropped behind 36-35 when they went without a field goad for eight minutes of the second half.
