(Continued from Page 4) A quick, simple and reliable testV for detecting alcohol or certain poisons in the body has been de- veloped by a University doctor and a researcher of a Michigan chemical company. Dr. Richard D. Stewart of the internal medicine department and Duncan S. Erley invented the test in which the patient blows up a plastic bag to about the size of a pillowcase, and an infra-red spec- trometer does the rest. It pin- points the exact chemical or toxic drug, and the approximate amount and time of consumption. Saran Bag The test is possible because of the properties of the saran bag. Most toxic compounds do not react with the material or cling to its surface. It retains the breath sample well enough to allow stor- age for several hours prior to analysis. Dr. Stewart reports that "this one test can effectively detect many different compounds." Analyze Air "Each organic compound has a specific infra-red fingerprint," he explains. When the bagged air is analyzed on the infra-red spec- trometer, this fingerprint identi- fies the specific alcohol, ether, gas, ketone, or halogenated hydro- carbon. Dr. Steward and Prof. Edward Beettner of the School of Public Health recently used this test to detect the presence of carbon tet- rachloride in the breath of a patient three weeks after the chemical had been swallowed. Present Prize In Psychology Suzanne DePree, '62, was pre- sented yesterday with the Walter Bolton Pillsbury award in psychol- ogy. This award is given to under- graduate students in psychology for conducting an outstanding ex- periment. Miss DePree received the award for her experiment on "The Influ- ence of Parental Achievement Ex- pectations and Role Definitions on Achievement Motive Development in Girls." Dr. Pillsbury came to the Uni- versity in 1896 to revive the psy- chology laboratory. In 1910, he became president of the American Psychology Organization.
