'M' Nine Plays Western Michigan in NCI 4 t«> By MIKE BLOCK College baseball season over? Not for the Wolverines. r. _ Today is the first day of the NCAA District 4 playoffs at West- ern Michigan. And, as a result of the district meeting Sunday at ForthWayne, Ind., Michigan will be there. The schedule for this afternoon sees the Wolverines acting as "home team" to the Broncos of WMU (although the match will be at Kalamazoo) in the first game, end in the second, Detroit (24-2) will play host to Illinois (26-5). Old Friends Western Michigan is not exactly an unknown as far as Michigan is concerned. Don Lund's stalwarts have just finished plastering the' Broncos in a three-game set, 9-2, 6-1, and 6-0. Western's mark plunged to 15-4. As of last Friday, the Bronocos were ranked as the nation's seventh best college baseball squad by a national magazine, and the Wolverines 14th. It would seem, that these ratings are due for some revision. The starters slated for today are Fritz Fisher (5-5) for Michigan and Ken Larson (5-1) for Western. Fisher vanquished Larson in Fri- day's 9-2 joust at Ann Arbor. Honig Doubtful The Wolverines are sound for the series opener with the possible exception of shortstop Dick Honig. Honig slashed the little finger on his left hand on May 18 at Wis- consin and has been carrying around six stitches ever since. He took infield practice Saturday, but Lund does not plan to start him unless he is 100 per cent recovered. Jim Newman has sparkled both afield and at bat filling in for Honig, and will continue to replace Honig should he be unavailable. Besides the superb hurling the Wolverines got against Western, one of the major reasons for their successes was the sudden outburst of catcher Joe Merullo. The senior backstop, who had been in the midst of a slump tprior to the series, notched several run-produc- ing hits and did his usual compe- tent job of handling the Michigan pitchers. These two are the only seniors in Lund's regular rotation, but their absence will be felt keenly next year.; The District 4 tourney is run on a doublehelimination basis. This means that in order for a team to be eliminated, it must drop two games, and thus the winner of the tourney may be the loser of one game before walk- ing off with the crown. The Winner of the Michigan- WMU game today and the victor in the Illini-Titan bout will meet in tomorrow's second game and the losers will encounter each other in the opener. This will con- tinue until every team but one has dropped two decisions. The champ then proceeds to the na- tional tournament at Omaha. Spalla Honored.
