AGE EIGHT THE MICHIGAN DAILY TUESDAY, MAX 8, 1962 ~GEEIGT TlE ICHGANDALY UESAYMAY8,..6 THIS AFTERNOON: Michigan State Netters Test 'M' Court Power Canham Renovates Mile Relay Michigan's netmen won't be' getting much of a rest after, two big conference meets Friday and Saturday as Michigan State's tout- ed net crew from East Lansing- land invades the Wolverine courts this afternoon. Action begins at 2:30 with Mich- igan after its fourth straight Big Ten victory in as many starts - and withra five-game undefeated mark on the season's record books. Michigan State was runner-up to the Wolverines in the Big Ten last spring. In regular season play Michigan nipped the Spartan racketmen, 5-4. This year the Michigan State netmen will take to the clay with, a 9-4 season record, the last vic- tory being over Illinois last Satur- day, 8-1. Michigan defeated the Illini Friday by an identical score. The Spartans will bank on Cap- tain Brian Eisner to give Michigan Big Ten champ Ray Senkowski some rough competition in the number one singles. Eisner was a semi-finalist for conference hon- ors a year ago and runner-up in 1960. Michigan State's Dick Colby and Wolverine Harry Fauquier, a pair of sophomores, will meet on the number two court. Colby is a for- ner state champ in Michigan high school competition. Rounding out the remainder of the Michigan State line-up: Tom Jamieson, another sophomore, will be at number three. McRae To Run The hurdler who won himself a place on the relay team last week is Bennie McRae, a varsity record- holder, Big Ten champion and, as of Saturday, a conquerer of Olym- pic runner-up Willie May. Hayes Jones, an Eastern Michi- gan product who had finished third in the Olympic 110-meter hurdles to May and Lee Calhoun, was watching the meet and agreed with McRae that May had not pulled a leg muscle coming off the last, hurdle despite the fact that the ex-Indiana star stiffened up. "He (May) got a muscle pull in November and it's a psychological thing that whenever he hits the tape now he thinks he's pulled a muscle," Jones explained. - McRae ran two 440's in practice last week to build up his stamina for the hurdles. It worked so well that the Newport News, Va., senior not only ran his best time of the year, a wind-aided :14.0, but also convinced Canham that he can run a :47 quarter if he keeps at it. Leps, Aquino Named Ergas Leps and Charlie Aquino, who have both won honors as middle-distance men in past sea- sons, are the other two who will probably get the nod for the re- lay, when the chips are down. Leps won the mile and 880-yd. run Saturday, and Aquino set a varsity record in beating Indiana's defending conference champ, Gene Graham, in the 660. Leps has been filling in as an- chorman on the relay whenever he was needed since he was a soph- omore two years ago, but Aquino just started this year and has been running under :50. Besides Denhart, Leps, Aquino and McRae, Michigan's other win- ners were high-jumper Steve Wil- liamsand discus thrower Ernst Soudek. Soudek, who hit 155'72" Satur- day, claims to be the only left- handed weight man in the confer- ence, but he's not a southpaw through nature. He broke his right hand several times as a youngster in Vienna, once when he tried a karate blow on a tree. IMPORTED and DOMESTIC BEER and WINE WITH NEW CHANGE-UP: Kerr Hits 5-0 Winning Trail '41 ROD DENHART ... new vault mark -- A0 WetJce1'4 GERMAN RESTAU RANT 203 East Washington OPEN: 4-12 P.M. CLOSED SUNDAY By JOHN SCOCHIN Last year a nobody, this year a star; that's the story of John Kerr, the unbeaten Wolverine hurler who won' his fifth straight game Satur- day with a three-hit shutout against Michigan State. The difference in Kerr's per- formance this year is the result of a well developed changeup, which, together with his curve and fast- ball, forms a trio of. pitches he can count on. "I'm not fast enough to depend on my fastball so I've tried to keep changing the speed of my pitches to keep the hitter guessing. My control has improved so I'm now getting the ball where I want it," Kerr commented. Helpful Addition "I developed the pitch in the cages of Yost Fieldhouse over the winter. Since we've been working out since Thanksgiving I've had plenty of time to make it a reli- able pitch," Kerr added. Coach Don Lund stated, "The addition of the changeup adds a Major Lea lue Standings new variety to John's pitches. It1 helps make the other more effec- tive because the hitters have more to watch for. He's also setting upc his. pitches better, according to7 the hitting capabilities of the man he's facing. Since he's keeping the ball low and around the plate, where his pitches work best, he's, tough to hit."1 Kerr believes continuous work- outs and practice throughout the whole year really help a pitcher. "Being in a lot of ball games de- velops your confidence and allows the coaching staff to see your po- tential and spot the weaknesses in your delivery under actual game conditions," he explained. Unsure, At Firstj "Before a pitcher uses any newj pitch in a game, he isn't sure of it. He thinks the first time he uses it the batter will knock it out of the park. That was the case with my changeup. On the Arizona tour I used strictly the curve and fast ball and stayed away from any- thing new. "I first used the pitch in relief against Notre Dame. Then I used; it with success in my five-inning stint against Minnesota. In Sat- urday's Michigan State game I fi- nally used it throughout the whole game. I now have complete con- fidence in the pitch and could throw ift all the time if I had to," added Kerr. Best Game The senior lefthander rates the Michigan State game as his best effort of the season. "I was hitting the corners pretty good and keep- ing the ball down low. As a result they were hitting all the balls to the infield," Kerr explained. "We have a very good defensive team and if I can get the batter to hit the ball where our fielders can reach it we'll get the man out. "I'm not a strikeout pitcher. If I try to make the opposition hit the ball to a fielder, it's just as much of an out as a strikeout. Be- sides, you don't get so tired, be- cause you've thrown fewer pitches. It gives you more stamina for the later innings," Kerr stated. Tough To Face Every pitcher has one man which he feels was the toughest batter he's faced all season. Kerr is no exception. "Mark Ikeda of Arizona gave me the most trouble. He's only 5'8" tall so he has a small strike zone. What's more, he's a darn good little hitter, so getting the ball into that strike zone doesn't solve your problem," Kerr commented. "However, regardless of who he's facing, a pitcher has to have con- fidence in himself and believe he's going to get the man out or he'll never win a ball game. You have to know the man you're facing and believe you're going to get every- body out." Despite his fine record this spring Kerr's potential was not forseen until he reached college. Why? "I played first base in high school," Kerr answered. The three-game sweep, coupled with Illinois' split in its double- header with Northwestern, puts Michigan in undisputed possession of first place in the Big Ten, a full game ahead of the Illini. First baseman Dave Campbell, who injured his knee in Saturday's nightcap and had to be helped off the field, seems to be all right. The knee responded to pressure Sunday but Lund is awaiting the results of X-rays to determine the extent of the injury. She means so much to you!
