John Havlicek: Not Just Defense

We first met John Havlicek
earlier this season following Ohio
State's first victory over Michigan.
The place was beautiful St.
John's arena in Columbus, and we
got the opportunity to talk to him
for a few minutes following the
Buckeyes' rather insignificant 89-
64 victory over the then cellar-
dwelling Wolverines in the second
Big Ten basketball game of the
season for both teams.
Typical Game
He -had played a typical Havli-
cek game that night, scoring 18
points, grabbing 8 rebounds, and
generally frustrating John Ooster-
baan,, Michigan's leading scorer,
who had the unenviable task of
trying to score against the OSU
captain.
Monday night it was more of the
same at Yost Field House.
Havlicek scored 15 points to pace
his team, outscoring his more pub-
licized teammate, Jerry Lucas;
Havlicek snared eight more re-
bounds, second to Lucas' 18; Hav-
licek held Oosterbaan to three field
goals in 10 attempts to once again
reaffirm his position as the num-
ber one defensive playe in college
basketball; and Havlicek delivered
three key baskets in the last five
minutes of play when upset-
minded Michigan started pulling
dangerously close to the nation's
number one team and Coach Fred
Taylor had lifted all but two first
stringers (including Lucas).
Hondo Havlicek
But then that has been the story
of his life. "Hondo" (as he is
known to his teammates due to a
resemblance to actor John Wayne)
has always been the team leader,
the come through guy, the man
Taylor could count on in almost
any situation.
After congratulating the Lans-
ing, Ohio senior for his part in
the Buckeye victory, we dived right
into a subject which has appar-
ently been closest to his heart for
the past three years-defense.

He is unquestionably the finest
defensive player in collegiate
ranks, and his status as such has
been threatened only once, two
year ago, when Darrell Imhoff was
gaining All - America status for
California. (However, Imhoff is
five inches taller than the Buckeye
star and guarded only the center,
whereas Havlicek invariably is as-
signed the top scorer. Even so,
he was given the edge by most
experts.)
"Which would you rather do,
score 20 points a game or hold
your opponent to 10?" we asked,
rephrasing a question asked so
much of Bill Russell when he was
wowing them with his defensive
tactics for San Francisco several
years ago.
Like To Score
"I like to score just as much as
the next guy, I guess," he replied,
"but I get just as big a kick out of
holding some high scorer down as
I do hitting a jump shot."
But Havlicek can score, and here
is where the dissimilarity begins
between a great defensive player
and Havlicek, the All-American.
Despite heavy defensive assign-
ments he still found time to score

at a 14.5 clip last year, 15.3 in 14
conference games. In addition he
grabbed 244 rebounds, second on
the team, and the 114 times he
cleared the boards in conference
games put him in the top ten in
that department also. He finished
ninth in scoring.
Only 55 Fouls
Add to this the fact that he com-
mitted only 55 personal fouls all
season (and didn't foul out of a
single game) and completed 75 per
cent of his free throw, attempts
and you have one of the best all-
around players in the ranks of
rah-rah basketball.
But still the story isn't complete.
Havlicek the basketball player is
also Havlicek the all-around ath-
lete. Although he has never even
gone out for college football he
was the fifth draft choice of the
NFL Cleveland Browns, their selec-
tion being based entirely on his
high school days as an all-Ohio
quarterback.
No Football
"I doubt that I'll play pro foot-
ball," he querier. "I'd be stupid
not to look into it, but it's a far-off
possibility."
