THE MICHIGAN DAILY Cite Need To Obey Conscience DAILY OFFICIAL BULLETIN (Continued from Page 4) int. in sales program in food field. Nat'l By SANDRA SANDELL "When the government system impinges upon the conscience, one should raise the question of civil disobedience," Rev. Harold Duerk- sen of the Office of Religious Af- fairs said Sunday. Speaking on "Individual and Personal Integrity vs. Social Re- sponsibility" at the Guild House, Rev. Duerksen said there is no- thing in the Bible which says one should obey a government rather than one's conscience. The Con- stitution is - based on freedom of conscience, he added.' Nationalism is being equated with religion and fundamentalism is working hand in hand with super-patriotism, in some cases. The phrase, "One nation under God," does not really refer to God, but to nationalism. Personal Responsibility Rev. Duerksen found the in- terest in the Peace Corps indica- tive of a desire for personal re- sponsibility. "The Peace Corps is just a drop in the bucket," he said. "We need many more drops. If students are apathetic about their responsibilities, they can hardly be blamed. There is little support from society, the univer- sities, or faculties. He said that students are fre- quently insulated from real think- ing by these institutions. A facade of unimportance is erected to hide students from more important in- terests. Rev. Duerkenfelt that one should never willingly take the life of another person. However, he felt that one can decide to sacrifice one's own life if necessary. Conscientious Objector "If one becomes a conscientious objector, one does not throw all restraint to the wind. For instance, one can use physical restraint on a mentally disturbed person if necessary." Rev. Duerksen and the audience discussed the possible alternatives to active military service which were available to the conscientious objector. A conscientious objector may serve in a non-combatent job with a military unit. Another alternative is working' a service project of value to the community. Experimental projects like this are helping pave the way for major advances in tomorrow's cars . . advances which could bring even better fuel economy, better perform. ance with less engine effort and safer driving at higher cruising speeds. This Is just one more example of how Ford is gaining leadership through scientific re, search and engineering. I
